ST. LOUIS - Webster University concluded its 2018 season here Saturday afternoon by posting as 5-1 win over Westminster (Mo.) College in the third place match of the 2018 St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament held at Dwight Davis Tennis Center in Forest Park.
With the victory, Webster closes the season with a 9-7 overall record and posts its first winning record since the 2016 squad went 10-5. Westminster finishes the season with a 3-7 record.
The Gorloks, who didn't have a senior on its roster and had four freshmen among their top six, opened Saturday's match by winning all three doubles matches by identical 8-6 scores.Â
At the No. 1 spot, sophomore
Riley Muren (O'Fallon, Ill./Illinois-Springfield) and junior
Charles McGhee (Waterloo, Ill./Waterloo) won 8-6 over Pete Hasenmueller and Adam Fusch. Muren and McGhee finished the season with a 3-7 record in doubles.
Freshmen
Austin Nation (Oklahoma City, Okla./Purcell) and
Tom Shutzman (St. Louis, Mo./Parkway South) won 8-6 at No. 2 doubles over Westminster's duo of Joshua Udinyiwe and Phillip Udinyiwe. Nation and Shutzman finshed the season with a 5-5 record in doubles and won their final two matches of the season.
The No. 3 tandem of freshmen
Nicolas Andrade (Quito, Ecuador/Francis Howell) and
Zach Bliss (Branson, Mo./Branson) won 8-6 over Westminster's tandem of Nick Lakowski and Giovanni Stricklan. The win by Andrade and Bliss was their sixth of the season and they finished with a 6-7 record in doubles.
After winning all three doubles matches, the Gorloks only need to win two singles matches to secure the win.Â
In singles action, McGhee gave the Gorloks a 4-0 lead after he posted a 6-0, 6-1 win over Stricklan at the No. 4 spot. The Blue Jays, though, would make it 4-1 as Hasenmueller picked up a 6-0, 6-1 win at the No. 2 spot over Nation.Â
Webster, though, would seal its 5-1 win at the No. 1 spot as Muren picked up a hard-fought 6-3, 6-3 win over Fuchs. With the win, Muren finished the season with an 8-6 record in singles.Â
Along with Muren, four other Gorloks finished with winning records in singles play on the year as Bliss went 10-5, while McGhee was 8-5, freshman
Courtland Butler (St. Louis, Mo./McKinley) went 4-0 and Andrade posted a 5-5 record.Â
Principia College won its fifth consecutive SLIAC Men's Tennis title thanks to its 5-2 win over Greenville in Saturday's championship match.
