Baseball Wins 10th Straight, Posts Comeback Road Win Over DePauw

GREENCASTLE, Ind. - Webster University began a string of eight straight road games here Sunday afternoon at Walker Field as they rallied to score three runs in the eighth inning to post a 6-5 non-conference victory over DePauw University and extend its win streak to 10 straight games.

With Sunday's win, the 22nd-ranked Gorloks improved its record to 24-7 overall, while DePauw fell to 6-21 on the season.

Sunday's game came less than 24 hours after the Gorloks finished off a home doubleheader sweep in St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action on Saturday evening against MacMurray College. The Gorloks won those games, 5-3 and 8-2 over the Highlanders.

In the win against DePauw, the Gorloks recorded 11 hits and has now had double-digit hits in five of its last six games. Sophomore first baseman Kyler Kent (Pottsboro, Texas/Pottsboro) continued to swing a torrid bat against the Tigers as he was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and is hitting .611 (11-for-18) over his last six games with eight runs scored and has had 7 RBIs.

Along with Kent's three hits, senior centerfielder Conner Wardlaw (Arnold, Mo./Jefferson College) had two hits and an RBI.

Trailing 5-3 heading into the eighth inning, the Gorloks sent seven hitters to the plate and scored three runs on two hits and two DePauw errors. In the inning, senior designated hitter Ben Dinter (Gurnee, Ill./College of Lake County) was hit by a pitch leading off the inning. Kent would follow with a single and both runners would advance a base on a fielding error by Tigers centerfielder Jackson Williams. Freshman third baseman Ben Swords would bring home the first run on his groundout. After sophomore Adam Lovell (Lafayette, Ind./Saint Joseph's) drew a walk as a pinch hitter and then stole second to put runners on second and third with two outs, junior second baseman Danny Strohm (St. Louis, Mo./Greenville University) hit a single up the middle that plated both Kent and Lovell to give the Gorloks a 6-5 lead.

In the bottom of the eighth, the Gorloks turned the game over to sophomore reliever Shane Donovan (Bartlett, Ill./Bartlett) and allowed just one baserunner on an error by freshman shortstop Matt Staker (El Cajon, Calif./Saint Augustine) over the final two innings to record his second straight and fourth overall save of the season. The four saves ties Donovan for fifth-most on the school's single-season chart. Steven Dooley holds the school's single season save record as he earned seven saves in 2012.

The Gorloks opened the scoring on Sunday by plating a run on two hits in the top of the first inning. In the inning, junior rightfielder Nate Tholl (Tinley Park, Ill./John A. Logan CC) was hit by a pitch, moved to third on a 2-out single through the right side by Kent and after Kent stole second, Swords brought home Tholl with the first run on his single to left off of DePauw starting pitcher Sam Huff.

DePauw, though, would answer in the bottom of the first inning as Collin Einertson drilled a 1-1 pitch from junior hurler Adrian Santiago (Chicago, Ill./Oakton College) over the wall in left field for a 3-run homer to give the Tigers a 3-1 lead.

The Gorloks would pull within a run in the top of the fourth thanks a lead-off double by Kent and a one-out RBI single by Wardlaw.

DePauw would score its fourth run of the game in the bottom of the fourth without the benefit of a hit as they used a hit batsman, a passed ball and two groundouts to score an unearned run.

In the fifth inning, Webster once again pulled within a run at 4-3 thanks to a two-out single by senior leftfielder Mike Wick (Bartlett, Ill./Bartlett) and an RBI double to left center off the bat of Tholl.

The Tigers answered again in the bottom of the fifth inning with a run on two hits to push its lead to 5-3 off of Santiago.

Santiago, who earned a no-decision, tossed five innings and allowed six hits and five runs (four earned), while walking two and striking out three. Freshman Jake Anderson (3-0) earned the win as he pitched the sixth and seventh innings and allowed just one hit, while walking two and fanning one.

Nick Casey (1-5), the third of four pitchers used by the Tigers, earned the loss for DePauw as he threw 1.2 innings and allowed two hits and one run, while walking one and striking out three.

DePauw's Huff, who started the game, pitched five innings and allowed six hits and three runs, while striking out two and walking none.

The Tigers recorded seven hits and committed two errors in Sunday's loss. Charlie Patrick had three of those seven hits for DePauw.

Webster will remain on the road as they return to SLIAC action this coming Tuesday, April 24 as they travel to Greenville, Ill., for a doubleheader against Greenville University beginning at 6 p.m. The doubleheader was originally scheduled for March 24, but was postponed  due to weather.
