ST. LOUIS - Webster University had 27 student-athletes named to the 2018 St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Spring All-Academic Team on Friday. The 27 student-athletes were third-most among the league's 10 member institutions as Greenville had the most total selections with 47 and Fontbonne was second with 31.
The Gorlok women's tennis and softball teams each had six players selected, while baseball was second with five selections. The men's and women's track teams each had four student-athletes selected and the men's golf team had two players honored.
Along with Greenville's 47, Fontbonne's 31 and Webster's 27 selections, Westminster (Mo.) College was next with 25 selections, while Principia was next with 24. Iowa Wesleyan had 14 honorees, Spalding was next with 13 and MacMurray had nine selections. Blackburn and Eureka each had four overall selections.
Webster had a total of 62 student-athletes named SLIAC All-Academic Team selections in 2017-18 as the Gorloks had 29 honorees in the fall, six honorees during the winter and 27 honorees this spring. The 62 student-athletes recognized by the league this season is tied for the fifth most all-time in school history and marks the third straight year that Webster has had 60 or more selections to the SLIAC All-Academic Teams.
The SLIAC Spring All-Academic team has 497 student-athletes total from around the conference. In order to earn All-Academic Team honors a student-athlete must hold a 3.5 cumulative grade point average, be at least a sophomore in academic standing and have been enrolled in at least one full year at their current institution.
In addition to having 62 student-athletes named to the SLIAC All-Academic Team this year, Webster also had two student-athletes named CoSIDA Academic All-District selections in 2017-18 as senior midfielder
Brianna Pagan (St. Louis, Mo./Washington) was honored in women's soccer and senior
Meghan Illig (St. Louis, Mo./Lindbergh) was honored in women's track/cross country.
Three of the 27 spring All-Academic Gorloks were recognized for a second time this year as Illig, sophomore
Meredith Sowers (Rolla, Mo./Rolla) and senior
Robert Koegel (Silverthorne, Colo./Summit) were also recognized during the fall as all three were members of Webster's cross country team. In addition, 11 of the 26 spring honorees are repeat selections from a year ago and four of the honorees are three-time SLIAC Spring All-Academic selections - Illig, senior softball player
Katlyn Garza (O'Fallon, Mo./Fort Zumwalt North), senior women's track athlete
Ashia Jackson (Florissant, Mo./Marquette Catholic) and senior softball player
Chelsea Thornley (Clinton, Mo./Clinton).
