Women's Soccer Scores Season-High Five Goals in Road Win Over Illinois College

JACKSONVILLE, Ill. - Webster University women's soccer rebounded from its first loss of the season here Wednesday evening by scoring a season high five goals en route to posting a 5-0 shutout victory over Illinois College at England Stadium on the Illinois College campus.

With the victory, Webster, who suffered its first loss of the season on Sunday at home to Coe College (3-1), improved to 7-1-0 on the season, while Illinois College falls to 4-4-0 on the year.

In Wednesday's match, Webster's offense took a season high 29 shots, including a season high 14 shots on goal and put five of those shots into the goal.

While its offense was clicking on Wednesday, so too was Webster's defense as the Gorloks held the Lady Blues to three shots, including just one in the first half.

Webster got the scoring started in the 16th minute of the opening half as junior midfielder Savannah Page (Sandy, Utah/Sandy) scored from just outside the box on a pass from the right wing from senior defender Jillian Zimpfer (St. Charles, Mo.,St. Charles) and junior forward Melissa Kasper (Oswego, Ill./Oswego). Page's goal was her second of the season.

About eight minutes after Page's goal, both teams were forced to leave the field due to weather delay that last nearly an hour.

About two minutes after the game resumed following the weather delay, Kasper would tally her team-leading fifth goal of the season as she scored on an open look from 10 yards out after a cross from the left side from Page to give WU a 2-0 lead.

In the first half, Webster outshot IC, 14-1 and 5-0 on goal.

Senior forward Nicole Bascio (Wentzville, Mo./Timberland) got into the scoring column in the 64th minute as she took a through ball from freshman midfielder Julia Paradise (St. Louis, Mo./Parkway North) and made a wide-open finish into the goal for her fourth goal of the season.

Webster's final two goals came within five minutes of each other between the 75th and 80th minutes from Wilson. Wilson's first goal was scored from close range in the 75th minute off a pass from Paradise and her second goal came in the 80th minute on a header off a cross from the right by freshman forward Jordan Lande (Sachse, Texas/Sachse).

The two goal game by Wilson was the first of her collegiate career and the fourth two goal game this season by a Gorlok.

Bascio and junior midfielder Olivia Osterhage (Eureka, Mo./Eureka) each had five shots, while Paradise, Wilson, Page and senior midfielder Carolyn Ries (St. Louis, Mo./Lindbergh) each had three shots in the win. In addition, three other Gorloks had two shots as 10 Webster players recorded at least a shot in the match.

Junior goalkeeper Abbey Mercer (Granite City, Ill./Granite City) got the start in the net for the Gorloks and in 90 minutes of action, she saved the only shot on goal she faced, which came in the 63rd minute of the match. Mercer improved her career record to 7-1-1 in goal and has now posted three shutouts in her Webster career.

Jenny Montelongo took two of her team's three shots and had the Lady Blues only shot on goal in the loss.

Lindsey Kormelink (4-2-0) took the loss in the net for the Lady Blues as she allowed five goals and recorded nine saves.

The Gorloks will return to action this coming Saturday, Sept. 22 as they host Transylvania University in a 12 p.m. match at World Wide Technology Soccer Park in Fenton, Mo.
