FENTON, Mo. - Webster University and Transylvania University battled each other for 110 minutes and two overtimes here Saturday afternoon to a 0-0 draw in non-conference women's soccer action at World Wide Technology Soccer Park.
The tie was the first for the Central Region's ninth-ranked Gorloks in the regular season since posting a 1-1 tie at home against Franklin (Ind.) College on Sept. 21, 2014, a span of 65 regular season matches between ties.Â
With the draw, Webster's record is now 7-1-1 on the season, while Transylvania's record is now 6-2-1 on the season.
Despite not scoring a goal for the first time this season, Webster held the edge in both shots and shots on goal in Saturday's matches as the Gorloks recorded a season high 33 shots and a season high 23 shots on goal.Â
The Gorloks had a chance late in the second period to prevent a draw, but a shot by junior midfielder
Payton Williams (St. Louis, Mo./Fort Zumwalt East) was saved right near the goal by Transylvania goalkeeper Morgan Patton, who repllaced the Pioneers starting goalkeeper Ally Barfield nearly nine minutes into the second half.Â
Williams' shot came nearly eight minutes after a shot by sophomore forwardÂ
Joi Wilson (Tracy, Calif./Tracy) had her shot saved by Patton right before it went into the net.Â
In the first overtime period, Transylvania's Ashley Chindo had her shot in the opening 18 seconds of the period go wide right and then Gorlok freshman forward
Jordan Lande (Sachse, Texas/Sachse) two shot attempts in the final two minutes of the period were missed, the second of two shots was wide right.Â
The Pioneers put two shots on goal in the opening five minutes of the second overtime period, but both shots were missed, including WU senior goalkeeper
Alisa Coralic (St. Louis, Mo./Mehlville) saving a shot attempt by Chindo.Â
In the 106th minute, Williams' shot on goal was wide right and in the 108th minute, Wilson almost ended the match, but her shot near the goal was saved by Patton to preserve the tie.Â
Williams led the way for the Gorloks with nine shots and five shots on goal, while Wilson added four shots, all of which were on goal. In addition to Williams and Wilson, Lande, junior forward
Nicole Bascio (Wentzville, Mo./Timberland) and junior midfielder
Savannah Page (Sandy, Utah/Sandy) each had three shots and combined for seven shots on goal.Â
On the day, 12 Gorloks recorded at least one shot in the win.
Perhaps the star of the match for the Gorloks was its defense, especially in the back end as Coralic and senior defenderÂ
Lilly Brauer (Belleville, Ill./Belleville East) and freshman defender
Ryleigh Grommet (Rolla, Mo./Rolla) held the Pioneers scoreless in 110 minutes of action as they limited them to 14 shots, including just a total of five shots after the first half. In the first half, Transylvania had nine shots, including four from Chindo.Â
Coralic played all 110 minutes in the net and recorded eight saves and is now 6-1-1 overall on the season.
Chindo recorded eight of her team's 14 shots and had five of their eight shots on goal. In addition to Chindo, Annie Stauffer and Abby Baker each had two shots and a combined three shots on goal.Â
Patton (3-2-1) earned the decision in goal for the Pioneer as she played a 56:02 and recorded 13 saves, while Barfield had 10 saves in the opening 53-plus minutes of action.
Webster will conclude the non-conference portion of its 2018 schedule on Wednesday, Sept. 26 as they host No. 2 ranked Washington University in St. Louis in a 6 p.m. match at World Wide Technology Soccer Park.Â
