FENTON, Mo. - Webster University closed out the non-conference portion of its non-conference schedule here Wednesday night by falling 5-0 to No. 1 ranked Washington University in St. Louis at World Wide Technology Soccer Park.
With the setback, the Gorloks conclude non-conference play with a 7-2-1 record, while WashU moves to 9-0-0 on the season.
The setback marked the second consecutive match that the Gorloks, who are ranked ninth in this week's latest United Soccer Coaches Central Region rankings, have been held without a goal as they posted a 0-0 double overtime draw in its last match this past Saturday at home against Transylvania. In fact, it is the first time since the 2016 that the Gorloks have failed to score a goal in back-to-back matches as in 2016, Webster suffered back-to-back 2-0 losses to Hendrix and Rhodes.
In Wednesday's match, Webster recorded a total of three shots and one shot on goal. The Bears entered the match having allowed just 17 shots, one goal and five shots on goal. Webster is just the fourth team this season to record at least three shots against the Bears and one of just three teams to record a shot on goal.
Two of Webster's three shots came after halftime as WashU held a 21-1 edge in shots in the opening half aand scored four of its five goals in the first half.
Junior midfielder
Olivia Osterhage (Eureka, Mo./Eureka) took two of her team's three shots and had WU's lone shot on goal on a header in the 28th minute. Senior midfielder
Carolyn Ries (St. Louis, Mo./Lindbergh) had WU's other shot in the match.
Prior to Osterhage's header, the Bears had already scored three goals, all three of which came from Taylor Cohen.Â
Cohen got the scoring started in the opening three minutes of the match as she took a pass from Jessica Kovach and delivered a shot from the penalty box area for her fourth goal of the season. About one minute later, Cohen scored again this time unassisted as she took a turnover shot from six yards out to give the Bears a 2-0 lead just four-plus minutes into the match.
Cohen's third goal of the match came in the 21st minute as she took a pass from Darcy Cunningham and took a cross volley shot from nearly 10 yards out to make the score 3-0.
With about six minutes left in the first half, Ellie DeConick tallied an assisted goal on a shot from the right side of the goal to give WashU a 4-0 lead.
Erin Flynn would complete the scoring in the 73rd minute as she took a cross volley from Marissa Kolkar to connected on a shot from seven yards out for her third goal of the season and WashU's fifth score of the match.
For the match, WashU had 37 shots and 17 shots on goal as DeConick led the way with five shots and three shots on goal, while Jesse Rubin, Isabella Tamburro and Cohen each had three shots in the win.
Senior goalkeeper
Alisa Coralic (St. Louis, Mo./Mehlville) played all 90 minutes in goal and recorded a career-high 12 saves, which is tied for ninth-most in a single match in school history. Coralic is now 6-2-1 on the season for the Gorloks.
Emma Greenfield, who played the first half in Wednesday's match, earned the win in the net for the Bears as she improved to 9-0-0 on the season and finished with one save.
The Gorloks will look to rebound this coming Saturday, Sept. 29 as they open up St. Louis Intercollegiate Conference play with a 1 p.m. home match against MacMurray College. Webster, who has won six straight SLIAC regular season titles, enters the SLIAC opener having won 20 consecutive league matches since suffering a 2-1 overtime loss at Spalding on Oct. 21, 2015.
