Women's Basketball Five Game Win Streak Snapped at Greenville

GREENVILLE, Ill. – Webster University saw its five game win streak come to a halt here Wednesday evening as the Gorloks suffered a 73-68 setback to Greenville University in St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's basketball action at H.L. Long Gymnasium on the Greenville campus.

With the loss, Webster fell to 11-4 overall and 6-2 in the SLIAC, while Greenville improved to 12-3 overall and remains undefeated in league play with a 7-0 record. The Gorloks moved into a tie with Spalding for third place in the league standings with Wednesday's result.

Wednesday's game was decided in the final two-and-half minutes of the contest as the Panthers outscored the Gorloks 7-2 over that final stretch to turn a 66-all tie into a five point win to extend its win streak to four consecutive games.

The Gorloks, who trailed 64-53 with 6:48 left in the final period, used a 13-2 run capped by a lay-up from redshirt sophomore forward Kaylee Heggemann (Washington, Mo./Three Rivers CC) with 2:44 left in the game. Heggemann's basket tied the game. The run began with a trey and a lay-up by freshman guard Hannah Cottrell (Steelville, Mo./Steelville), before Heggemann would score WU's next six points, including hitting a trey with 3:14 left to push the Gorloks within two at 66-64.

Heggemann finished the game with a game and career-high 21 points, including scoring 12 of those 21 points after halftime. In addition to Heggeman, who has now scored in double figures in three consecutive games and four times in her last five contests, Cottrell tallied 14 points, while sophomore guard Naomi Johnson (St. Louis, Mo./Greenville University) added 11 points, including scoring eight of them in the second half against her former school and junior guard Jaysea Morgan (Fisk, Mo./Twin Rivers) extended her double-digit scoring streak to five games as she had 10 points and added five assists and three steals.

Greenville, who was tabbed to win the SLIAC title this season in the Preseason Coaches' Poll, was paced by 17 points from Wesley Woodard, while Morgan St. James tallied 14 points off the bench to help the Panthers to a 32-6 edge in points off the bench.

It looked like early on that Webster might not have a chance at the end of the game as Greenville scored the game's first six points and led 17-6 just a little over six minutes into the opening period when the Gorloks used a 7-2 run to pull within 19-13 following a trey by Morgan. After GU's Ellaina Davis hit a trey to push the Panthers lead back to nine, WU would score three of the final five points to trail 24-16 after the first 10 minutes.

Webster would open the second period by scoring eight of the first 10 points to pull within 26-24 following a trey by Johnson with 7:35 left in the period. The Panthers, though, answered with a 14-3 run to push its lead to 40-27 with two minutes left in the first half. WU would score four of the final six points in the period to cut Greenville's lead to 41-31 at the half.

The Gorloks would regroup at the half and opened the third period 9-4 run to pull within 45-40 following two free throws by freshman forward Addison Beussink (Jackson, Mo./Saxony Lutheran) with 7:35 left in the period. Greenville responded with a 6-2 run to push its lead to 51-42 with 5:31 left in the period.

Johnson, Heggemann and Cottrell would then score WU's next nine points to tie the game at 51. GU, though, would close the period by scoring the final three points to take a 54-51 lead heading into the final 10 minutes of the game.

Greenville's lead would eventually reach 11 points just a little over three minutes into the fourth period, before the Gorloks rallied to tie the game, before the Panthers game closing run.

For the game, Webster shot 38 percent from the field and 35 percent from the 3-point line, while Greenville shot 48 percent from the field and 36 percent from long distance.

Both teams each had 34 rebounds as Heggemann had six boards, while Cottrell and sophomore forward Darieana Hunter (Norman, Okla./Norman) each had five boards for the Gorloks.
