Etienne, Johnson Lead Way in Gorloks Hard-Fought Home Win Over Fontbonne

WEBSTER GROVES – Webster University sophomore forward Rodson Etienne (West Palm Beach, Fla./Royal Palm Beach) continued his hot offensive play here Saturday afternoon as he scored 30 points and had 13 rebounds to help the Gorloks to its 93-87 victory over Fontbonne in St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action at Grant Gymnasium.

Etienne's 30 points came on the heels of his career high 31 point effort in Webster's 130-122 win on Wednesday at Greenville University. With his back-to-back 30 point games, Etienne becomes just the second Gorlok in school history to score at 30 points in consecutive games and the first since Webster and SLIAC Hall of Famer Jeff Reis (1999-01) posted six straight games of scoring 30 or more points during the 2000-01 season.

With the win, Webster improves to 12-4 overall and 8-1 in the SLIAC, while Fontbonne falls to 5-11 overall and 3-6 in the league. The victory extended WU's homecourt win streak to four straight games.

While Etienne scored a game high 30 points, it was the offensive prowess of junior guard Josh Johnson (St. Louis, Mo./Clayton) that sealed WU's seventh straight in the series over the Griffins as Johnson scored 17 of Webster's final 19 points, including connecting of six straight free throws in the final 26 seconds of the contest to hold off Fontbonne's second half rally.

Johnson finished the game with a career high 27 points and added five boards and four assists. It marked the eighth time this season that Johnson has scored 20 or more points in a game and the Gorloks are 7-1 in the season when Johnson scores 20 or more points.

The third double-digit scorer for the Gorloks was sophomore forward Nigel Wilcox (Alpharetta, Ga./Centennial) as he tallied 15 points and 10 rebounds for his second consecutive double-double and team leading sixth of the season. In Wednesday's win at Greenville, Wilcox scored a career high 34 points and pulled down 16 rebounds.

Webster, who led 42-37 at the half, watched the Griffins open the second half on 19-10 lead to turn a five point deficit into a 56-52 lead following a free throw by Carter Otwell with 13:50 left in the game. Fontbonne's run was aided by a combined 10 points from Gus Kleekamp and Otwell.

The Gorloks, though, would respond with a 12-8 run that tied the game at 64-all following two free throws by Johnson with 9:42 left in the game. The teams would take turns holding the lead over the one-plus minutes until Johnson drilled a trey with 8:13 left to give WU a 71-68 lead. The lead was the first for the Gorloks since early in the second half.

Fontbonne would score four of the next seven points, including using a lay-up by Luke DeLine with 6:46 left in the game to push the Griffins within two at 74-72. DeLine, who scored 30 points earlier this season in the Griffins 75-74 home overtime loss to the Gorloks, tallied 21 points off the bench in Saturday's game. DeLine scored 15 of those points in the second half.

DeLine's lay-up seemed to wake up Johnson as he began his late game scoring flurry with a lay-up at the 6:38 mark. After Wilcox blocked a shot on the other end of the floor on Fontbonne's ensuing possession, Johnson hit a trey with 5:59 left in the game to give the Gorloks a 79-72 lead.

After two treys from DeLine and a three-point play on a lay-up and free throw by Otwell gave the Griffins an 81-79 lead with 4:24 left in the game, Johnson would hit another trey 33 seconds later to give the Gorloks an 82-81 lead. About a minute later, Johnson hit another 3-pointer to push WU's lead to 85-81 with 2:58 remaining.

The Griffins, though, wouldn't go away without a fight as Otwell made 1-of-2 free throws and Jared Woodcock drilled a trey from the right side to tie the game at 85 with 1:40 remaining. Etienne would give the Gorloks an 87-85 lead following his lay-up with 39 seconds left and on Fontbonne's ensuing possession, Etienne would block a shot from about 20 feet by DeLine. Johnson would then hit those six consecutive free throws to seal Webster's win.

Along with DeLine's 21 points, Otwell added 18 points and nine assists, while Anthony Jones had 15 points off the bench to help Fontbone to a 39-6 edge in bench points. The other two Griffins to post double figures in scoring were Woodcock, who had 14 points and Kleekamp, who tallied 10 in the loss.

In the first half, Webster shot 52 percent from the field, but was just 6-for-11 from the free throw line that helped keep the Griffins in the game as Fontbonne was held to 33 percent shooting in the opening half.

Etienne scored 16 of his 30 points in the first half, including scoring seven points during a 14-6 run in the final eight minutes of the opening half that turned a 26-all game into a 40-32 lead for the Gorloks. Fontbonne would score five of the opening half's final seven points to give WU its 42-37 halftime lead.

For the game, Webster shot 56 percent from the field and 46 percent from the 3-point line. It was the second consecutive game and fourth time in its last five contests that Webster had shot 50 percent or better from the field. The Gorloks shot a season high 62 percent from the field in Wednesday's win at Greenville.

The Gorloks also held a 48-35 edge on the glass as along with Etienne's 13 boards and Wilcox's 10 boards, junior guard Enrique Tankins (Wentzville, Mo./Timberland) had eight boards to go with his eight points, six assists and three steals.

Webster committed 17 turnovers, while Fontbonne had just nine in the game.

The Gorloks dished out 25 assists and blocked seven shots, including five by Wilcox to push his career total to 100 blocks.

Over its last two games, Webster has recorded 67 assists, including a school record 42 against Greenville.

Both teams shot well at the free throw line as Webster was 19-for-26 (73 percent) at the line, including Johnson going 8-for-8 at the charity stripe and Fontbonne went 14-for-19 (73.7 percent). Johnson has now made 22 consecutive free throws since missing a free throw in double overtime at Blackburn.

The Gorloks will look to make it five straight home wins this coming Wednesday, Jan. 23 as the Gorloks host Iowa Wesleyan for a 7:30 p.m. contest at Grant Gymnasium. The Tigers, who fell 66-52 to the Gorloks at home on Dec. 1, picked up an impressive 75-59 home win on Saturday over Westminster (Mo.) College and will play at Fontbonne on Monday afternoon in a make-up game that was postponed last Saturday.
