WEBSTER GROVES - Webster University scored a season high 52 points here Monday evening en route to posting an 88-37 non-conference women's basketball victory over Principia College at Grant Gymnasium.
With the victory, Webster improves to 13-4 overall and extends its homecourt win streak to seven straight games. Principia falls to 1-13 overall on the year.
In Monday's game, which was originally scheduled for Jan. 12 but was postponed due to a winter storm that hit the St. Louis area, the Gorloks scored 26 points in each of the first two quarters and then scored 21 points in the third quarter to hold a 73-24 lead heading into the final quarter.
Freshman forward
Addison Beussink (Jackson, Mo./Saxony Lutheran) led the way offensively for the Gorloks as she tallied 16 points and added eight boards. Beussink, who has a team high 13 double-digit scoring efforts this season, was one of 13 players that scored in the game as all 18 players that suited up for the Gorloks played at least seven minutes.Â

Webster jumped out to a 7-0 lead just 72 seconds into the game and after Principia scored their first basket on a lay-up by Sabrina Netherwood just 86 seconds into the contest, the Gorloks used a 17-0 run to push out to a 24-2 lead following two free throws by Zarr with 2:26 left in the opening quarter. The run was keyed by four points apiece from Zarr and Beussink.
Nikki Matters would stop WU's run with a basket at the 1:32 mark and Hunter would cap the scoring in the quarter on a lay-up with 1:29 left to give the Gorloks a 26-4 lead after the opening quarter.Â
Webster would open the second quarter on 17-3 run to push out to a 43-7 advantage following a lay-up by Manes with 4:33 left in the quarter. Manes' lay-up capped an 11-0 scoring flurry by the Gorloks. During the run, Beussink scored six of the 17 points.Â
After Matters hit two free throws to stop WU's run, the Gorloks responded with a 9-0 run to push in front 52-9 with 26 seconds left in the quarter. Matters, who scored all nine of her points in the first half, completed the first half scoring with a basket with 12 seconds left to drop Webster's lead to 52-11 at the half. The 41 point halftime lead was the largest of the season for the Gorloks.Â
The Gorloks, who have now won 15 of the last 17 games in the series against Principia, would use a 17-4 run over a span of nearly six minutes in the third quarter to push its lead to 51 points at 71-20 following a lay-up by Hunter with 1:31 left in the period. Hunter and Zarr combined for 11 of WU's 17 points during that third quarter run. The Panthers would close the quarter by scoring four of the final six points to take a 73-24 lead heading into the final quarter.
Webster would outscore Principia, 15-13 in the fourth quarter to set the final margin. 10 of Webster's 15 points in the quarter were scored by Baker, who scored eight of WU's final 11 points. The Gorloks lead grew to as much as 55 points following a lay-up by Baker with 4:05 left in the game. Baker's lay-up made the score, 86-31.Â
For the game, Webster shot 44 percent from the field and 25 percent (5-for-20) from the 3-point line and dished out a season high 27 assists, including a career high six assists by Zarr and three each from Hunter, redshirt sophomore forward
Kaylee Heggemann (Washington, Mo./Three Rivers CC) and freshman guard
Hannah Cottrell (Steelville, Mo./Steelville). All in all, 12 different Gorloks picked up at least one assist in the win.
Webster's defense held Principia to 20 percent shooting from the floor and 29 percent shooting from the 3-point line and they forced 19 turnovers that led to 28 points. The Gorloks had a season low nine turnovers, including just four turnovers after halftime.Â
In addition, Webster finished with a season high 64 rebounds as along with Beussink's eight boards, freshman guard
Lauryn Freeman (Fort Worth, Texas/Timber Creek) had a career high six boards. The Gorloks also had 26 offensive boards in the game, including holding a 25-7 edge in second chance points.
Sophia Hathaway led the Panthers with a double-double of 15 points and 14 rebounds, while Matters had nine points in the loss.Â
The Gorloks struggled at the free throw line as they went 7-for-15 (47 percent) at the line, while Principia shot 72 percent (13-for-18) at the line, including going 11-for-16 from the charity stripe in the second half.Â
Webster will return to St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play on Wednesday, Jan. 23 as they host Iowa Wesleyan in a 5:30 p.m. contest at Grant Gymnasium. The Gorloks picked up a 94-57 win at Iowa Wesleyan earlier this season.Â
