Strong Second Half Helps Gorloks to Road Win Saturday Over MacMurray

JACKSONVILLE, Ill. – Webster University used a strong second half effort on both ends of the floor here Saturday afternoon to collect a 75-43 victory over MacMurray College in St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's basketball action at Bill Wall Gymnasium.
 
With the victory, Webster improved to 15-4 overall and 9-2 in the SLIAC and extends its win streak to four straight games, while MacMurray fell to 2-18 overall and 1-10 in the league. 

Saturday's game concluded a stretch of four games in eight days for the Gorloks as they won all four of those games by an average margin of 33 points per contest and they averaged 80 points per game and held three of the four opponents under 45 points. 
 
The Gorloks, who led 38-23 at the half, outscored the Highlanders, 37-20 after halftime, including holding the home team scoreless in the first four-plus minutes of the fourth quarter. In the second half, Webster scored 16 points in the third quarter and tallied 21 in the fourth to post 13th straight win over MacMurray. 
 
Webster's win was keyed by a double-double from redshirt sophomore forward Kaylee Heggemann (Washington, Mo./Three Rivers CC), who scored 14 points and had a career-high 11 rebounds. The double-double was the first of Heggeman's collegiate career. Nine of Heggemann's 14 points came in the second half.
 
In addition to Heggemann's double-double, junior guard Jaysea Morgan (Fisk, Mo./Twin Rivers) added 12 points and sophomore forward Darieana Hunter (Norman, Okla./Norman) added 11 points and five boards off the bench. 
 
The Gorloks opened the third quarter on a 14-5 run to push its lead to 52-28 after two Heggemann free throws with 1:59 left in the quarter. MacMurray would score four of the quarter's six points to give Webster a 54-32 lead heading into the final period. 
 
Webster opened the fourth quarter on an 12-0 run to push its lead to 66-32 with six minutes left in the game. The run began with a free throw by Heggemann and was capped by a basket from freshman guard Alyssa McByers (Leander, Texas/Leander). After WU's opening run, the Highlanders would score its first points of the quarter on a trey by Alexis Doyle with 5:35 left in the quarter. After's Doyle's 3-pointer, Webster would close out the game on a 9-8 run to set the final margin.
 
Haley Icenogle paced the Highlanders with 10 points, while Doyle added eight points. WU held Chassidy Hays to just two points and seven boards. Hays entered the game averaging 16.9 points and 13.1 rebounds per game. 
 
In the early going neither team could muster much offense as the two teams combined to score eight points in the opening five-plus minutes of the first quarter, but the Gorloks used an 8-2 run to turn a 4-all tie into a 12-6 lead with 2:38 left in the opening quarter. After a lay-up by MacMurray's Haley Icenogle dropped WU's lead to 12-8, Webster would score the final seven points of the quarter, including capping the scoring in the quarter on a trey from freshman guard Caity Jones (West Plains, Mo./Thayer), to take a 19-8 lead after the opening 10 minutes. 
 
The Highlanders would open the second quarter on an 11-2 run to push within 21-19 just a little less than three minutes into the quarter. MacMurray's run was aided by three treys. Following MacMurray's run, the Gorloks responded with a 17-2 flurry to push its lead to 38-21 following a lay-up by Morgan with 1:21 left in the quarter. WU's run was aided by seven consecutive points from Cottrell, who finished the game with nine points. 
 
MacMurray would cap the first half scoring with two free throws from Icenogle with 20 seconds left to drop Webster's lead to 38-23 at the half. 
 
For the game, Webster shot 43 percent from the field, but was just 2-for-14 (14.3 percent) from the 3-point line, while the Gorloks held MacMurray to 28 percent shooting from the field and 27 percent from long distance. 
 
Webster held a 49-32 edge on the boards as along with Heggemann's 11 rebounds, freshman forward Addison Beussink (Jackson, Mo./Saxony Lutheran) added 10 rebounds. 
 
The Gorloks also forced MacMurry into 24 turnovers and scored 24 points off those turnovers. WU finished with 18 turnovers, including committing 10 of those in the first half. 
 
Additionally, Webster's bench outscored MacMurray's 35-13 as along with Hunter's 11 points, Jones finished with seven and freshman guard Lauryn Freeman (Fort Worth, Texas/Timber Creek) had six points in the win. 
 
The Gorloks will return to action on Wednesday, Jan. 30 as they return home to Grant Gymnasium to host Spalding University in a 5:30 p.m. SLIAC contest. Spalding picked up a 70-43 win over the Gorloks in Louisville, Ky., on Dec. 15.
