Men's Soccer Falls at Spalding in SLIAC Game of the Week

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Webster University and Spalding University Men's Soccer put on a show here for 90 minutes in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Game of the Week here Saturday as the Golden Eagles scored two first half goals and made those two goals stand up as they posted a 2-0 victory over the Gorloks at the SU Athletic Complex. 

With the setback, Webster falls to 7-4-1 overall and 1-2 in the SLIAC, while Spalding improved to 9-2-1 overall and remains undefeated in SLIAC play with a 3-0-0 record. 

In Saturday's game, Webster outshot Spalding, 16-12, but the Golden Eagles held a 5-2 advantage in shots on goal. In addition, Webster held a 6-4 edge in corner kicks. 

Despite outshooting Spalding, the Gorloks were unable to put any of those shots in the goal as Webster as shutout for the third time this season. The Gorloks have outshot its opponents nine times this season and is just 4-5 in those nine matches. 

Sophomore midfielder Justin Kohler (Waterloo, Ill./Waterloo) and sophomore midfielder Henok Moges (St. Louis, Mo./Parkway North) each had three shots for the Gorloks, while sophomore midfielder Issac Pearson (St. Louis, Mo./Maplewood-Richmond Heights), sophomore forward Aamahn Murvin (Sahuarita, Ariz./Walden Grove), junior midfielder Hunter Olaso (Kailua-Kona, Hawaii/Kealakehe) and freshman forward Jarret Gabriele (Rolla, Mo./Rolla) each had two shots in the match.

Moges and Gabriele were the only Gorloks to put shots on goal against Spalding goalkeeper Trevor Massa, who made two saves and recorded his eighth shutout of the season. 

The Golden Eagles got into the scoring column late in the 25th minute as Kornell Hilliard took a pass from Tyler Gore and put a shot into the top left of the box for the first goal of the match. 

Hilliard gave Splading a 2-0 lead in the 31st minute as he scored from seven yards out off a pass from Chris Encarnacion for his 11th goal of the season, which is tops among all SLIAC players. 

The Gorloks had a chance to get on the scoreboard in the 52nd minute, but a header from Moges was saved by Massa and in the 75th minute, Gabriele put a shot on goal, but Massa was able to make the save to keep the Gorloks off the scoreboard. 

Hilliard finished with four shots and three shots on goal, while Alioune Cisse finished with three shots and Trustun Ashburn had two shots in the win. 

Sophomore Matt Coffey (Eureka, Mo./Eureka) took the loss in net for the Gorloks as he recorded three saves and allowed two goals in 90 minutes of action to drop his record to 4-1-1 on the season. 

The match featured 19 fouls and a yellow card for each team as WU committed 10 fouls and Spalding had nine fouls. 

Webster will look to snap its two match losing streak this coming Wednesday, Oct. 16 as they host Westminster (Mo.) College for a 5 p.m. SLIAC match at World Wide Technology Soccer Park in Fenton, Mo.
