FULTON, Mo. - Webster University closed out the road portion of its 2019 schedule here Saturday by posting back-to-back sweeps over Fontbonne and Principia at a quadrangle hosted by Westminster College at the Historic Gym on the Westminster campus.
With the two wins, Webster moves its record to 14-10 overall and 11-4 in the SLIAC, while Fontbonne fell to 4-21 overall and 4-10 in the league and Principia falls to 4-19 overall and 1-13 in the SLIAC.
For the day, Webster's offense recorded 30-plus kills in both matches and recorded a total of 19 aces, including 11 aces against Fontbonne, while their defense recorded a total of 150 digs and 10.5 blocks, including six blocks against Principia.Â
Junior outside hitter
Samantha Kruse (Waterloo, Ill./Waterloo) finished the day with 17 kills, five aces and 26 digs, including a double-double of 11 kills and 16 digs against Fontbonne, while freshman outside hitter
Lauren Borik (Belleville, Ill./Althoff) had 16 kills and hit .412 and junior middle hitter
Jordan Price (Fulton, Ill./Carl Sandburg College) has 13 kills, four blocks and hit .225.Â
Senior setter
Jenna Rodriguez (Smithton, Ill./Freeburg) had 23 assists and 20 digs and also added eight aces, including a career high seven aces in the win over Fontbonne. The seven aces were tied for fifth most in a match in school history and the most aces by a Gorlok in a match since Crystal Shelton had eight aces against Westminster on Nov. 3, 2005.Â
Defensively, junior libero
Kristen Farrah (St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell) recorded 46 digs as she had 20-plus digs in both matches, while sophomore middle hitter
Kylie Burke (Belleville, Ill./Belleville West) had six blocks, including two solo blocks and two block assists against Principia.Â
With her 46 digs, Farrah pushed her career total to 1,870 digs and now just 59 digs shy of Katie O'Toole's school record of 1,929 digs, which was set from 2013-16.
Against Fontbonne, Webster hit .167 and held Fontbonne to a .052 hitting percentage.Â
In the opening set, Webster jumped in front 4-0 and led 8-2 when the Griffins used 3-1 run to to pull within 9-5. After Webster used a 6-4 run to push its lead 15-9, FBU would respond with a 4-1 run to pull within 16-13. That would be as close as the Griffins would get as WU would score nine of the final 15 points to seal its 25-19 set win.Â
FBU scored the first two points and led 4-2 in the second set when the Gorloks used a 10-3 run to push out to a 12-7 lead. The run was capped by back-to-back kill from Kruse and Price. The Griffins, though, responded with an 8-4 run to drop WU's lead to 16-15. From that point, the Gorloks would close the set by scoring nine of the final 10 points, including Rodriguez recording five consecutive aces, to post a 25-16 set win and take a 2-0 lead in the match. In the set, WU had six aces to help negate being outhit, .083 to .038 by the Griffins.Â
In the third set, Borik and Kruse combined for 14 kills to help the Gorloks post a 25-16 win to seal its three-set sweep. Borik had eight of her 11 kills in the final set, while Kruse finished with six of her 11 kills in the set. The Gorloks hit .341 in the set as they recorded 17 kills and held FBU to an .073 hitting percentage.Â
Farrah had 21 digs in the win over Fontbonne.Â
FBU was led by Rae Andrews, who had eight kills and 12 digs, while Taylor Jackson added seven kills and seven digs.Â
Against Principia, the Gorloks hit .156 as they had 36 kills and eight aces and also recorded 88 digs and had six blocks on defense.Â
The first set was all Webster as they scored the first three points and cruised from that point as they posted a 25-13 win in the set. In the set, WU hit .226 and had 11 kills and four aces, including two aces by Kruse.
In the second set, Principia scored the first two points before the Gorloks scored nine of the next 11 points to take a 9-4 lead. The Gorloks lead grew to 13-7, before Principia used a 10-7 run to pull within 20-17. After a kill by Kruse gave the Gorloks a 21-17 lead, the Panthers used a 6-2 run to pull within 23-21. That would be as close as Principia would get as senior right side hitter
Sarah Jacobs (Carbondale, Ill./Murphysboro) scored WU's final two points on kills to seal WU's 25-22 win. In the set, WU hit .226 with 15 kills and had 33 digs, while Principia hit .151 with 13 kills and they also had 33 digs.Â
The third set was a defensive battle as the two teams combined for 75 digs as Webster had 38 digs and four blocks, including 10 digs from Kruse and three blocks by Burke, while the Panthers got 12 digs from Amanda Roberts. In the set, both offenses struggled as WU hit . 053 and had 10 kills, while Principia hit -.070 and had six kills and 10 attack errors.Â
Price paced WU with nine kills and hit .280 in the set, while Jacobs had seven kills. On defense, Farrah 25 digs and Kruse added 15 digs in the win.Â
Jessica Bayne had 12 kills to pace Principia, while Roberts and Nikki Matters combined for 47 digs as Roberts had 24 digs and Matters added 23 in the loss.Â
The Gorloks will look to keep its winning streak intact this coming Wednesday, Oct. 30 as they host Fontbonne in its annual Dig Pink Match beginning at 7 p.m. in Grant Gymnasium on the Webster campus. Prior to Wednesday's match, the Gorloks will honors its three seniors and two graduating juniors in a prematch ceremony. The five players that will be honored are Rodriguez, Jacobs, senior student manager Claire Martin, Kruse and Farrah.Â
