Men's Soccer Wins Fourth Straight, Collects Road Victory Over Principia

ELSAH, Ill. - Webster University continued its late season strong play here in men's soccer on a cold and rainy Tuesday evening as the Gorloks collected an impressive 2-1 victory at Principia College to extend its win streak to four straight and keep its St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament hopes alive.

With the victory, Webster improves to 11-5-1 overall and 5-3 in the league, while Principia falls to 9-6-0 overall and 6-2 in the league.

In Tuesday's match, the Gorloks were outshot, 20-7 and 7-5 on goal, but despite getting outshot, Webster's defense was strong as they survived numerous scoring chances by the Panthers in the second half, but each and every time, the Gorloks defense responded to seal the win and remain in contention for one of the four spots in next week's SLIAC Tournament.

The top four team at the end of the regular season on Saturday will qualify for the SLIAC Tournament and if the Gorloks are able to pick up a win on Saturday at home against Greenville, the Gorloks will earn one of those four coveted spots in the league's postseason tournament.

Sophomore forward Aamahn Murvin (Sahuarita, Ariz./Walden Grove) got the scoring started in Tuesday's match as he scored on an unassisted goal in the 26th minute to give the Gorloks a 1-0 lead.

Murvin would give the Gorloks a 2-0 lead nearly seven minutes into the second half as he took a pass from sophomore midfielder Justin Kohler (Waterloo, Ill./Waterloo) and found the net for his eighth goal of the season and his fourth career two goal game. The eight goals is one fewer than Murvin scored last season as he led the Gorloks with nine goals.

Principia, who is still in second place in the league standings despite Tuesday's loss, prevented a shutout as Patrick Sherman scored an unassisted goal in the 61st minute to snap Webster's nearly 334 minute streak of not allowing a goal. The goal was the first allowed by the Webster since allowing a goal to Westminster in the 86th minute of its 2-1 win over the Gorloks on Oct. 16.

Prior to Tuesday's match, Webster had recorded three consecutive shutouts and in fact, over its last four games, the Gorloks have scored 18 goals and have allowed just one and have also held a 79-33 edge in shots.

Following Sherman's goal, the Panthers took six more shots, including Kaleb Keller putting a shot that went over the net with 37 seconds left in the game.

Keller and his brother, Kaden, combined to take 12 of Principia's 20 shots and took five of the Panthers' seven shots on goal. In addition to the Kaden brothers, Cole Heinbaugh and Cameron Sellers each had three shots in the loss.

Murvin and senior midfielder Edin Mehmedovic (St. Louis, Mo./Mehlville) each took two shots for the Gorloks. In addition to Murvin and Mehmedovic, the other shots taken by Webster came from junior midfielder Hunter Olaso (Kailua-Kona, Hawaii/Kealakehe), sophomore midfielder Isaac Pearson (St. Louis, Mo./Maplewood-Richmond Heights) and freshman defender Tavis Cameron (St. Louis, Mo./Parkway South) each took one shot.

Sophomore goalkeeper Matt Coffey (Eureka, Mo./Eureka) picked up the win in goal to improve to 6-1-1 on the year as he allowed just one goal and recorded six saves.

Nick Klusmeyer (8-5-0) took the loss in goal for the Panthers as he allowed two goals and recorded three saves.

Principia held a 5-4 edge in corner kicks and the Gorloks were whistled for 19 fouls to nine for the Panthers.

Webster will close out the regular season on Saturday, Nov. 2 with a 1 p.m. match against Greenville at World Wide Technology Soccer Park.
