Women's Soccer Scores Six Goals in Win at Principia

ELSAH, Ill. - Webster University extended its win streak to three consecutive matches here Tuesday as the Gorloks posted a 6-0 shutout victory over Principia College in St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action on a rainy and cold evening at Principia Soccer Field.

With the win, Webster improves to 12-4-1 overall and 6-1-1 in the SLIAC, while Principia falls to 4-11-0 overall and 3-5-0 in the league. Tuesday's win sets up a match-up on Saturday afternoon at home against Greenville for the regular season SLIAC championship and the No. 1 seed in this year's SLIAC Tournament. 

In Tuesday's match, the Gorloks recorded 42 shots and put 19 of those shots on goal, while Principia finished with eight shots and four shots on goal. The 42 shots were the fourth most in a match this season by the Gorloks and the most since taking 47 shots in its 13-0 win against Iowa Wesleyan on Oct. 9.

The Gorloks got the scoring started in the 13th minute as sophomore midfielder Jordan Bilyeu (St. Louis, Mo./Lindbergh) connected on an goal off an assist by senior forward Melissa Kasper (Oswego, Ill./Oswego). The goal was the third of the season for Bilyeu.

With less than four minutes left in the first half, sophomore forward Jordan Lande (Sachse, Texas/Sachse) gave the Gorloks a 2-0 lead as she took a pass from Kasper and found the net for her 17th goal of the season. 

Senior midfielder Savannah Page (Sandy, Utah/Jordan) gave the Gorloks a 3-0 lead in the 58th minute as she took a pass from Kasper and found the net for the 12th goal of the season. The goal was the first for Page since the Iowa Wesleyan match on Oct. 9. 

About a minute later, Page scored on a penalty kick to give the Gorloks a 4-0 lead. The goal was the fifth time this season that Page had scored at least two goals in a match. 

Lande added her second goal in the 64th minute as she took a pass from Kasper and found the net for her SLIAC leading 18th goal of the season. The assist by Kasper was her fourth of the match and the four assists tied a Webster single match record for assists. Prior to Tuesday's match, the last time a Gorlok collected four assists in a match was against Iowa Wesleyan on Oct. 24, 2015 as Jessica Mess recorded four assists. 

Kasper has now assisted on eight of Webster's last 11 goals and with her six points on Tuesday, Kasper pushed her career point total to 146, which is fourth on the school's all-time list. 

Sophomore defender Kaleigh Finney (Concord, Calif./Northgate) complete the scoring in the 86th minute as she scored an unassisted goal and the goal was her fourth of the season. 

Page finished the match with 10 shots and three shots on goal, while Kasper added eight shots and five shots on goal and Bilyeu, Lande and freshman defender Reaghan Young (Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley) each took three shots in the win. Overall, 15 different Gorloks took a shot in the match and 12 of those players recorded at least one shot on goal. 

Georgia Rather took three of Principia's eight shots, while Sophia Hathaway added two shots in the loss. 

Freshman goalkeeper Taryn Banfield (Plano, Texas/Plano East) continued her solid play in net as she posted her third consecutive shutout to move her record to 11-3-1 on the season. Banfield, who has now recorded eight overall shutouts, recorded four saves in Tuesday's match. 

Hannah Hathaway (1-6-0) earned the loss in goal for the Panthers as she allowed six goals and made 13 saves.

The Gorloks held a 13-0 edge in corner kicks and the Gorloks were whistled for 10 fouls to just two for Principia.

Webster will now close out the 2019 regular season this coming Saturday, Nov. 2 as the Gorloks host Greenville (9-5-2 overall, 6-0-1 SLIAC) for a 3:30 p.m. SLIAC match-up at World Wide Technology Soccer Park.
