Men's Soccer Opens Home SLIAC Play With 2-1 Setback to Iowa Wesleyan

FENTON, Mo. - Webster University opened the home portion of its St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference schedule here Wednesday evening by suffering a hard-fought 2-1 setback to Iowa Wesleyan at World Wide Technology Soccer Park.

With the setback, Webster falls to 7-3-1 overall and 1-1 in the SLIAC, while Iowa Wesleyan improves to 3-8-1 overall and 2-0 in the league.

The Gorloks finished the match with a 15-10 edge in shots and held an 8-0 advantage in corner kicks, but the Tigers scored two goals in the opening 28 minutes of the match and the were able to hold off Webster's late rally.

Trailing 2-0, Webster appeared poised to get on the scoreboard as junior midfielder Hunter Olaso (Kailua-Kona, Hawaii/Kealakehe) scored on a header following a corner kick late in the 86th minute, but Olaso was whistled for being offsides, which negated the goal and kept the score 2-0 in IWU's favor.

About two minutes following that offsides call, the Gorloks would finally score thanks to a shot from three yards off a rebound by junior forward Matt Ceriotti (St. Louis, Mo./SLUH). The goal was the first of the season for Ceriotti and his third career collegiate goal.

In the final 90 seconds of the match, the Gorloks took four shots, but none of them connected, including having two of the shots blocked by the Tigers defense.

The Tigers opened the scoring in the 17th minute as Francisco Saldana drew a penalty in the box and scored on a penalty kick for his eighth goal this season to give IWU a 1-0 lead

Saldana had a hand in the Tigers other goal as he was credited with an assist on a goal by Hugo Bonilla from 10 yards out in the 28th minute.

In the opening half, IWU held a 5-4 edge in shots, but WU took 11 shots to IWU's five after halftime.

Freshman defender Tavis Cameron (St. Louis, Mo./Parkway South), junior forward Aamahn Murvin (Sahuarita, Ariz./Walden Grove) and junior midfielder Joacquin Soto (Flagstaff, Ariz./Flagstaff) each took two shots for the Gorloks. In addition, nine other Gorloks were credited with a shot.

Carlos Mateo Moreno paced IWU with three shots and two shots on goal, while Saldana and Bonilla each had two shots and combined for three shots on goal in the win.

The Tigers, who entered Wednesday's match leading the league in yellow cards with 22, picked up another one in the 77th minute and committed 17 fouls in the match. Webster had just eight fouls on the night.

Junior goalkeeper Matt Amick (St. Louis, Mo./Lindbergh) earned the start in goal for the Gorloks and played the entire first half and allowed two goals and made one save to fall to 3-3-0 on the season. Sophomore Matt Coffey (Eureka, Mo./Eureka) replaced Amick in the second half and finished with three saves.

Trevor Haasis (2-2-1) earned the win in net for the Tigers and allowed one goal and recorded three saves in 90 minutes of action.

Webster will look to rebound this coming Saturday, Oct. 12 as the Gorloks travel to Louisville, Ky., for an 11 a.m. CT match at Spalding University (8-2-2 overall, 2-0 SLIAC).
