WEBSTER GROVES - Webster University Men's Basketball scored the final 10 points of regulation here Tuesday evening to force overtime and then was outscored 13-3 in the extra session to fall 80-70 to Missouri Baptist in non-conference action at Grant Gymnasium.
With the setback, Webster opens the season 0-2 for the first time since the 2016-17 season, while Missouri Baptist improves to 2-1 on the year.Â
Senior guard
Josh Johnson (St. Louis, Mo./Clayton) scored 21 of his game high 30 points after halftime, including scoring 15 of Webster's final 21 points in the second half to help the Gorloks force overtime. The 30 points was one point shy of Johnson's career high 31 points last season against Principia College.
With 4:04 left in the regulation, MBU used 1-of-2 free throws from Jahmouri Robinson to give the Spartans a 67-57 lead. The Gorloks, though, would begin to crawl back into the game as senior forward
Enrique Tankins (Wentzville, Mo./Timberland) scored on a basket just 12 seconds later to begin a 10-0 run to close the second half.Â
Following Tankins' basket, Johnson hit two free throws with 3:30 left to pull WI within 67-61 and after Robinson would miss two consecutive treys, senior guard
Jordan Clay (St. Louis, Mo./Blackburn) brought WU within four at 67-63 on his layup with 2:02 left in regulation. Neither team would score over the next 74 seconds before Johnson coverted a fast-break lay-up with 48 seconds left to bring the Gorloks within two points at 67-65. Johnson's lay-up came after Clay blocked a shot by James McKelvin on MBU's previous trip down the court.Â
After Robinson missed a layup with 20 seconds left in regulation, Johnson grabbed the rebound and drove down the court and as he reached the paint, he drew a foul and hit two free throws with 14 seconds left to tie the score at 67-all to force overtime.Â
In overtime, neither team scored until 76 seconds into the extra session when Robinson connected on a jumper to give the Spartans a 69-67 lead. The lead grew to 72-67 following a trey by Hassan DeCarolis with 2:56 left in the overtime period. Tankins would bring the Gorloks within 72-69 with 2:37 left.
Brendon Hardy would answer Tankins' basket with a lay-up at the 2:13 mark to give MBU a 74-69 lead. On the ensuing possession, Johnson drew a foul and hit 1-of-2 free throws to drop MBU's lead to 74-70. That would be as close as the Gorloks would get as MBU scored the final six points of the overtime sessions, including hitting 3-of-4 in the final 40 seconds.Â
In addition to Johnson's 30 points, junior forward
Rodson Etienne (West Palm Beach, Fla./Royal Palm Beach) added 14 points, while Tankins tallied a double-double of 13 points and a career high 16 rebounds and also had five assists, a career-high four blocks and collected three steals in 35 minutes of action.Â
Both teams scored 31 points in the first half and 36 points in the second half of Tuesday's game.Â
DeCarolis led the Spartans with 20 points. while Robinson added 17 points and Morenke Bettis scored 12 points, all of which came in the second half. The fourth double-digit scorer for MBU was McKelvin as he tallied 10 points and seven boards.
The Spartans held a 50-47 edge on the glass as Aumonie Armond paced the Spartans with 10 rebounds. 19 of Webster's rebounds came on the offensive end of the floor, including Tankins pulling down 10 offensive boards.Â
In the first half, Webster jumped out to a 9-4 lead and led 11-7 when the Spartans used a 14-8 run to take a 21-19 lead with 7:59 left in the opening half.Â
Etienne would score two straight baskets to give WU a 23-21 lead with 5:46 left in the half, before MBU closed the half on a 10-8 run to tie the score at 31 at the half.Â
Webster would open the second half on a 10-5 run capped by a lay-up from senior guard
Aron Hopp (Lincoln, Ill./Lincoln College) to take a 41-36 lead just a little over four minutes out of the locker room. The Spartans, though, responded with a 20-5 run over next seven-plus minutes to take a 58-48 lead.Â
The Gorloks would come right back and score five consecutive points on a trey and a jumper by Johnson to pull WU within five points at 58-53. From that point, MBU would score nine of the next 14 points to take its 67-57 lead with 4:04 left in the regulation.
For the game, Webster shot just 33 percent from the field and went 4-for-30 (13.3 percent) from the 3-point line, while MBU shot 46 percent from the floor and 38 percent from the 3-point line.Â
The teams combined to shoot 33 free throws as WU was 12-for-17 for 71 percent from the free throw line and MBU was 10-for-16 from the line for 63 percent.Â
Webster forced 14 turnovers that led to 16 points and had nine steals. MBU forced eight turnovers and didn't block shot.Â
Tuesday's game featured 14 ties and seven lead changes and MBU's bench outscored the Gorloks bench, 21-4.Â
The Gorloks will look to collect its first win of the season this coming Saturday, Nov. 16 as they face Piedmont College in the Randy Lambert Classic hosted by Maryville College in Maryville, Tenn.Â
