WEBSTER GROVES - Webster University Men's Basketball struggled taking care of the ball here Saturday afternoon as the Gorloks committed 17 turnovers that led to 14 points by Hanover College in the Panthers 65-58 victory in the finale of the 11th-Annual Webster Classic held at Grant Gymnasium.
While Webster had 17 turnovers that led to 14 points by Hanover, the Panthers had just four turnovers in the game and that was the biggest deciding factor in Saturday's game as the Gorloks shoot the ball better than the Panthers and held a 39-37 edge on the boards. For the game, Webster shot 45 percent from the field, 46 percent from the 3-point line and 91 percent (10-for-11) from the free throw line, while Hanover shot just 37 percent from the field, 29 percent from long distance and 56 percent (5-for-9) from the free throw line.
With the setback, Webster drops its record 1-5 on the season, while Hanover, who advanced to the NCAA Division III Tournament last season, improves to 4-0 on the season.
Senior guard
Josh Johnson (St. Louis, Mo./Clayton), who named to the Webster Classic All-Tournament Team, paced Webster's offense with 17 points. In Webster's two games in its own tournament, Johnson averaged 23.5 points per game and was the leading overall scorer in the four-team event that also included Manchester and Westminster (Mo.) College.
In addition to Johnson, senior forward
Enrique Tankins (Wentzville, Mo./Timberland) added a double-double of 14 points and 10 rebounds and tied a career high with four blocks, while junior forward
Rodson Etienne (West Palm Beach, Fla./Royal Palm Beach) had eight points and four boards.
Isaac Hibbard, who was named the MVP of the Webster Classic, paced Hanover with 17 points and eight boards, while Blake Robertson added 16 points and five steals to also earn a spot on the All-Tournament Team. The third Panther that scored in double figures on Saturday was Connor Washburn as he had 12 points and five boards.
In Saturday's game, Webster scored the first five points and led 7-2 in the game's opening two minutes, before Hanover used an 8-2 run to take a 10-9 lead following a trey by Robertson with 15:36 left in the opening half. The Gorloks, though, would retake lead on a trey by Tankins with 14:06 left in the first half.
The Panthers, who are now 6-2 all-time against the Gorloks, used 15-8 run following Tankins' trey to push out to a 25-20 lead with 6:27 left in the opening half. After WU used a 5-2 run capped by a basket from senior guard
Aron Hopp (Lincoln, Ill./Lincoln College) to pull within 27-25, Hanover would close the first half on a 7-2 run to take a 34-27 lead at the half.
In the opening half, Webster, who shot 50 percent from the field and 43 percent from the 3-point line, committed 10 turnovers that led to nine points by the Panthers, who shot 42 percent from the floor and 31 percent from the 3-point line.
Hanover opened the second half on a 7-0 run to push its seven point halftime lead to 41-27 with 16:28 left in the game. The Panthers' lead would eventually push to as much as a 15 points at 61-46 with 4:25 left in the game.
The Gorloks, though, wouldn't go away as they responded to Hanover's run with a 12-4 run over the final four-plus minutes of the game to set the final margin.
Along with Tankins' 10 boards, senior guard
Blake Ferrell (Ballwin, Mo./Parkway South) pulled down a career high seven boards and the Gorloks also blocked a season high seven shots.
Despite being outrebounded by two boards, Hanover did hold a 13-3 edge on the offensive glass that led to a 16-1 advantage in second chance points.
Westminster opened Saturday's action in the Webster Classic by posting a 98-94 win over Manchester University. In that game, the two teams combined to make 31 3-pointers as Westminster was 18-for-34 from downtown and Manchester finished 13-for-28 from long distance.
Ethan Thompson, who made seven treys in the game, paced the Blue Jays with 28 points, while Jaxson Althaus, who was 6-for-9 from the 3-point line, added 26 points in the win. Manchester was led by 26 points from Matthew Westman, while DeMoines Whitney added 18 points and seven boards.
Thompson, Althaus and Whitney were the other members of the Webster Classic All-Tournament Team.
Webster will look to rebound this coming Tuesday, Nov. 26 as the Gorloks play a 7 p.m. contest at seventh-ranked Washington University in St. Louis. Last season, Webster collected an impressive 72-64 home win over the Bears.
