WEBSTER GROVES - Webster University tallied 15 or more points in all four periods here Saturday evening en route to scoring a season high 81 points in its 81-45 women's basketball victory over Covenant College in non-conference action at Grant Gymnasium.
With the win, the Gorloks improve to 2-1 on the season, while Covenant College falls to 2-4 overall on the season. The win also helped Webster extract some revenge on Covenant as the Scots picked up an 83-74 win over the Gorloks last season on its homecourt.
Along with scoring a season high 81 points, which came without an made 3-pointer as the Gorloks were 0-for-6 from the long distance, Webster's defense also forced 39 turnovers that led to 37 points and 25 steals, which is tied for 12th most in a game in school history. The Gorloks also had 25 assists on 33 made baskets in the win.
Saturday's game marked the first time that Webster failed to hit a 3-pointer in a game since being held without a 3-point basket last season against Augustana, which ironically was also Webster's third game of the 2018-19 season, much like today's game was Webster's third game of the 2019-20 season.
While Webster failed to hit a 3-pointer in the game, so too did Covenant as the Scots went 0-for-7 from long distance against the Gorloks and it marked the first time in school history that neither team had hit a 3-pointer in a game.
Sophomore forward
Addison Beussink (Jackson, Mo./Saxony Lutheran) paced three Gorloks in double figures with a career high tying 21 points and also pulled down eight boards and tied a career high with three blocked shots. In addition to Beussink, sophomore guard
Hannah Cottrell (Steelville, Mo./Steelville) added 12 points, five assists and seven steals and senior guard
Jaysea Morgan (Fisk, Mo./Twin Rivers) had 10 points and a career high eight assists. The eight assists are tied for eighth most in a game in school history and the most since Cottrell had eight assists against Blackburn.
In fact, in Saturday's game, 11 of the 12 Gorloks that saw action in hte game scored and 10 of the 12 Gorloks that played pulled down a rebound.
Along with the three double-digit scorers, junior guard
Kiara Rhines (Glendale, Ariz./Ironwood) and freshman guard
Tiffany Sakamoto (St. Louis, Mo./Saint Joseph Academy) each tallied eight points, while junior forward
Kaylee Heggemann (Dutzow, Mo./Three Rivers CC) and freshman forward
Julie Baudendistel (St. Louis, Mo./Lindbergh) each had six points.
The Gorloks shot 48 percent from the field and 75 percent (15-for-20) from the free throw line in the win.
Webster scored the first four points of the game and led 8-2 when Covenant used a 4-2 run to pull within 10-6. That would be as close as the Scots would get as the Gorloks used a 13-4 run to push out to a 23-10 lead with 2:32 left in the opening period. The Scots, though, would close the first period on a 6-4 run to cut Webster's lead to 27-16 after the opening 10 minutes.
The Scots would open the second period on an 8-4 run to pull within 31-24 with 7:05 left in the period, before the Gorloks closed the period on a 12-5 run to take a 43-29 lead at the half.
In the opening half, Webster forced Covenant into 20 turnovers that led to 19 points and Beussink scored 15 of her 21 points in the half.
The third period belonged to the Gorloks as they outscored the Scots, 18-8, to push its lead to 61-37 after three periods. In the period, WU forced Covenant into nine turnovers that led to eight points.
Much like the third period, the fourth period was also dominated by the Gorloks as they outscored the Scots, 20-8, including pushing its lead out to a game high 36 points following a free throw by freshman guard
Christina Branche (Rio Linda, Calif./Monterey Trail) with 1:27 left in the game. Sophomore forward
Courtney Ragland (New Athens, Ill./New Athens) would score Webster's final four points to set the final margin.
Rachel Thomas led Covenant with 13 points, while Ruthie Moore added 10 points and 10 rebounds, but committed eight turnovers. Hannah Monday and Cosette Kirsch each had eight points and combined for 18 turnovers as Kirsch recorded 13 turnovers in the loss.
The Scots shot 31 percent from the field and were 13-for-16 (81 percent) at the free throw line and also held a 42-31 edge on the boards.
The Gorloks committed 17 turnovers in the win and held a 54-28 edge in points in the paint.
Webster will look to make it two wins in a row this coming Tuesday, Nov. 26 as they travel to Decatur, Ill., for a 6 p.m. game at Millikin University, who is 4-0 on the season. The game with Millikin will mark the first road game of the 2019-20 season for the Gorloks.
