FENTON, Mo. - Webster University made history here Saturday afternoon as the Gorloks earned its 10th all-time St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament Championship as the Gorloks used a goal in the 86th minute from sophomore midfielder
Jordan Bilyeu (St. Louis, Mo./Lindbergh) to post a 1-0 shutout over victory over Greenville University in the championship match of the 2019 SLIAC Women's Soccer Tournament at World Wide Technology Soccer Park.
With the win, Webster (15-4-1 overall) secures the SLIAC's automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament and will find out its postseason destination on Monday, Nov. 11 at 12 p.m. CDT when the NCAA unveils the 64 team field for this year's NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Tournament. The NCAA will air its tournament selection show online at
www.NCAA.com. Webster will be making its 14th all-time appearance in the NCAA Tournament and its first since 2017 when they lost in the first round at Loras College.
Bilyeu's goal, which as her fourth of the season, came off of rebound from a shot from senior midfielder
Savannah Page (Sandy, Utah/Jordan). Page's shot was from just inside the box and it was denied by Greenville goalkeeper Marjory Coates, but as the ball was loose, Bilyeu connected with the ball from about two yards out and found the back of the net for the only goal of the match and give the Gorloks its league record 10th tournament championship.
"I am so proud of our team's mental toughness, focus and enthusiasm. Their preparation and commitment throughout the offseason and into the season has paid off with the success here at the end of the season," said Webster 21st-year head coach
Luigi Scire following his team's win. "They wanted this championship and these fantastic young women deserve all the credit."
In Saturday's match, the two teams, who shared the regular season SLIAC title as they each went 7-1-1 in league play, combined for 32 shots as Webster outshoot the Panthers, 21-11 and held an 11-6 edge in shots on goal. Greenville closes the season with an 11-7-2 overall record.
Page took seven of Webster's 21 shots and put four of those shots on goal. In addition to Page, senior forward
Melissa Kasper (Oswego, Ill./Oswego), who repeated as the SLIAC Offensive Player of the Year this season, added three shots, while senior defender
Lilly Brauer (Belleville, Ill.//Belleville East), senior midfielder
Olivia Osterhage (St. Louis, Mo./Eureka), sophomore midfielder
Ryleigh Grommet (Rolla, Mo./Rolla) and freshman defender
Reaghan Young (Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley) each took two shots in the win.
In the opening minutes of the match, Osterhage had a chance to give the Gorloks an early lead, but her shot was saved by Coates. In the 24th minute of the match, Page took two shots, with the second shot getting blocked and the Young followed up with a shot that was saved to keep the match scoreless.
The Panthers had a scoring chance in the 30th minute, but a shot by Kate Arthur was saved by Webster freshman goalkeeper
Taryn Banfield (Plano, Texas/Plano East).
Near the end of the first half, Kasper took two shots from inside the box in both the 42nd and 43rd minutes, but both of them were high to keep the match scoreless at the half.
Page put another shot on goal in the 67th minute, but once again Coates made a save and about a minute later, Brauer put a shot on goal that Coates was also able to save. The shot by Page came a little over a minute after Greenville coach Jeff Wardlaw, who was named this year's SLIAC Coach of the Year, received a straight red card from the officials.
Banfield would make a save on a shot from Molly McDonnell in the 71st minute to keep the match still deadlocked.
After Bilyeu's goal, the Panthers had two opportunities to tie the match as a shot by Ellie Cummins in the 88th minute was turned away by Banfield and a shot in the closing seconds by SLIAC Newcomer of the Year Jen DeLeon DeLeon was saved by Banfield to seal the win.
Banfield, who was named the MVP of the SLIAC Tournament, didn't allow a goal and made six saves in improving her record to 14-3-1 on the season. Banfield has now recorded 581 scoreless minutes in goal since allowing a goal to Fontbonne in the 48th minute of the Griffins 1-0 win over the Gorloks on Oct. 19. In addition, the shutout was her 11th of the season and Webster's 13th overall on the year.
In two matches in the SLIAC Tournament, Banfield recorded two shutouts and had nine saves.
Cummins took four of Greenville's 11 shots, while McDonnell added three shots. Cummins and McDonnell combined for four shots in the goal in the loss.
