GREENVILLE, Ill. – Webster University Women's Basketball put the brakes on its three game losing streak in a big way here Monday evening as the Gorloks shot a season high 62.7 percent from the field en route to earning an impressive 80-60 victory over Greenville University in St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play at H.J. Long Gymnasium on the Greenville campus.
With the win, Webster improves to 3-4 overall and 1-1 in the SLIAC, while Greenville falls to 4-5 overall and 1-1 in the league. In addition to stopping a three game losing skid with the victory, the Gorloks also halted a seven game losing skid to the Panthers as prior to Monday's win, Webster's last win against Greenville came at home on Nov. 30, 2016 when the Gorloks earned an 80-69 win.
"I am really proud of the way our players came out tonight and competed on both ends of the floor," Webster head coach
Jordan Olufson said following his team's win. "Our effort and intensity at the outset was the key to our success."
The 62.7 (32-for-51) field goal percentage for the Gorloks is the second highest mark in a game in school history and the highest percentage for the Gorloks since shooting 56.1 percent (32-for-57) from the field against Spalding on Jan. 6, 2018. The single game school record for field goal percentage is 63.5 percent against Mt. St. Claire College on Jan. 7, 2003.
Junior guard
Naomi Johnson (St. Louis, Mo./Greenville University) led the way offensively for the Gorloks as she scored a career high 24 points, including going 4-for-6 from the 3-point line and finishing the game 10-for-13 from the field against her former school. Johnson played the 2017-18 season at Greenville, before transferring to Webster.
The Gorloks needed some offensive production from Johnson in Monday's game as the Gorloks played without its leading scorer and rebounder, sophomore forward
Addison Beussink (Jackson, Mo./Saxony Lutheran). Beussink, who is averaging 16.7 points and 7.8 rebounds per game, sat out the game due to a concussion suffered in last Thursday's home overtime loss to Spalding University.
Johnson was one of four Gorloks to score in double figures on the night as sophomore guard
Hannah Cottrell (Steelville, Mo./Steelville) and freshman forward
Julie Baudendistel (St. Louis, Mo./Lindbergh) each had 14 points, while senior guard
Jaysea Morgan (Fisk, Mo./Twin Rivers) tallied 11 points and added five rebounds and five assists.
After watching Greenville score four of the game's first seven points, the Gorloks responded with a 23-0 run keyed by 10 points from Johnson and seven points from Morgan to push out to a 26-4 lead with 1:05 left in the period. The Panthers would 2-of-4 free throws over the next 36 seconds to pull within 26-6. Sophomore forward
Taylor Zarr (St. Louis, Mo./Oakville) would cap the scoring in the period with two free throws with 12 seconds left to give WU a 28-6 lead after the opening period. Johnson, Morgan and Baudendistel combined for 18 of Webster's 28 points in the period.
In the second period, both teams shot over 50 percent from both the field and 3-point line as the Gorloks outscored the Panthers 23-20 in the period to take a 51-26 lead at the half. In the period, Webster shot 67 percent from the field and 75 percent from the 3-point line, while Greenville shot 53 percent from the field and 50 percent from long distance. The 25 point halftime lead is the largest of the season to date for the Gorloks.
Webster opened the third period on a 13-7 run to push its lead to 33 points at 64-33 following a jumper by Cottrell with 4:29 left in the period. The 31 point lead was the largest of the game for the Gorloks. Following Cottrell's basket, the Panthers would close the period outscoring the Gorloks, 15-0, to cut Webster's lead to 64-48 after three periods.
Webster would then outscore Greenville 16-12 in the final period to set the final margin. In the final period, Webster was 5-for-6 (83.3 percent) from the field and went 6-for-10 from the free throw line, while Greenville shot 27 percent from the field and was 4-for-4 at the free throw line.
The 20 point win was the largest in the series against Greenville since Jan. 10, 2015 when the Panthers earned a 64-44 win at Grant Gymnasium over the Gorloks.
Emily Reinneck led the way for Greenville with 18 points, while Megan Barrett added 10 points and Madelyn Stephen finished with nine points in the loss.
Along with shooting 62.7 percent from the field, the Gorloks shot 58.3 percent (7-for-12) from the 3-point line. Greenville finished the game shooting 37 percent from the field and 33 percent from the 3-point line.
The Gorloks also forced Greenville into 21 turnovers that led to 27 points and Webster collected 18 steals, including five steals from Cottrell and held a 32-25 edge on the boards, including Baudendistel pulling down a team high six boards.
Webster committed 22 turnovers, including 12 of those turnovers coming in the second half, while Greenville had 21 turnovers. The Gorloks also had a 25-2 edge in fast break points.
The Gorloks also finished with a season-high tying 25 assists, including a career-high tying seven assists from sophomore guard
Lauryn Freeman (Fort Worth, Texas/Timber Creek). Morgan and Johnson each had five assists.
Webster will look to win its second consecutive game this coming Saturday, Dec. 14 as the Gorloks host MacMurray College for a 1 p.m. SLIAC contest at Grant Gymnasium.
