OWENSBORO, Ky. - Webster University opened up play here Friday evening in the Kentucky Wesleyan College Invitational with a 5-0 setback to Midway University at the KWC Tennis Courts.
With the setback, Webster falls to 0-2 on the 2019 season, while Midway improves to 5-1.Â
In Friday's match, the two teams opened by playing doubles as the Eagles won all three of those doubles matches as the Gorloks won just five games in doubles action.Â
Four of those five games were won by Webster's No. 3 team of freshman
Tanner Haugen (Jefferson City, Mo./Jefferson City) and senior
Charlie McGhee (Waterloo, Ill./Waterloo) as they fell 8-4 to Midway's No. 3 team of Steven Knowles and Sebastian Hernandez.Â
The other game in doubles was won by WU's No. 2 team of junior
Nicolas Andrade (Quito, Ecuador/Francis Howell) and sophomore
Tom Shutzman (St. Louis, Mo./Parkway South) as they fell 8-1 to David Alfonso and Hugo Retortillo.Â
Midway's No. 1 team won 8-0 over WU's No. 1 team of junior
Riley Muren (O'Fallon, Ill./Illinois-Springfield) and sophomore
Austin Nation (Oklahoma City, Okla./Purcell).Â
Meanwhile, in singles action, which was played as an 8-point pro set, Midway picked up its fourth point at the No. 3 spot as Retortillo earned an 8-1 win over freshman
Parker Schaefer (Barnhart, Mo./Barnhart) and then sealed the match win with Julian Lopez defeating Muren, 8-2 at the No. 1 spot.Â
The match at No. 3 between Nation and Alfonso was not completed when Midway won the match. Alfonso was leading 7-2 in the match.Â
None of the other three singles matches were played once Midway sealed the win.Â
Webster will return to action on Saturday, March 2 as they play matches at 2 p.m. against Kentucky Wesleyan and at 4 p.m. against Brescia to conclude play in the KWC Invitational.
