Men's Tennis Defeats Wisconsin Lutheran, Posts Second Straight Win in Hilton Head

HILTON HEAD, S.C. - Webster University Men's Tennis continued its strong play at the Spring TennisFest here Monday afternoon as the Gorloks picked up its second straight win in the event as they defeated Wisconsin Lutheran, 6-1, at the Hilton Head Resort.

With the win, Webster improves to 2-0 at the Spring TennisFest and moves its season record to 4-2, while Wisconsin Lutheran falls to 0-3 on the season.

Webster only needed to play four matches on Monday as they won three of four matches that weren't played by default as WLC only had four players available for the match. Webster won by default in singles at the No. 5 and 6 spots and also won by default at No. 3 doubles.

In doubles, the only match that was played went to WLC as their No. 1 team of Jonny Wordell and Matt Plaski defeated WU's No. 1 team of sophomore Tom Shutzman (St. Louis, Mo./Parkway South) and freshman Harsh Jaswell (O'Fallon, Mo./Fort Zumwalt West). It was the first time this season for Shutzman to play at No. 1 doubles and the match was the of Jaswell's collegiate career. 

The No. 2 doubles match was not played once WU clinched the match with the win at No. 3 doubles by default.

Meanwhile, in singles action, Webster won all three of the singles matches that were played as they won 37 of the 42 games played in the match.

In singles play, junior Riley Muren (O'Fallon, Ill./Illinois-Springfield) improved to 4-2 on the season in singles as he won 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 1 spot of Wordell. 

Sophomore Austin Nation (Oklahoma City, Okla./Purcell) won 7-5, 6-0 at the No. 2 spot over Plaski, while senior Charlie McGhee (Waterloo, Ill./Waterloo) moved to 4-1 at No. 3 singles as he dispatched WLC's Tyler Fahney by identical 6-0, 6-0 scores. 

Shutzman's match at No. 4 singles with Jake Stellick was not completed. 

Webster will look to make it three straight wins on its Spring Break trip as they face Thomas (ME) College at 9 a.m. ET on Wednesday, March 13 at the Hilton Head Resort.
