HILTON HEAD, S.C. - Freshman
Jasmine Willis (Kenosha, Wis./Bradford) picked up her first collegiate singles win here Monday in Webster University Women's Tennis' 8-1 setback to Illinois Wesleyan in its second match of the 2019 Spring TennisFest at the Hilton Head Resort.
Willis win came at the No. 6 singles spot and gave the Gorloks (2-4 overall) is lone match victory against the Titans, who improved to 4-8 on the season.Â
Against the Titans, Willis posted a 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 win over Sydney Rowley to win just the eighth individual match of the season and the first match at No. 6 singles. Prior to Willis' win on Monday, Webster's No. 6 singles players were 0-2 on the season.Â
Despite the 8-1 loss to Illinois Wesleyan, several of the singles matches were close throughout before the Titans were able to win.Â
At the No. 5 singles spot, sophomore
Liz Gerger (St. Louis, Mo./Francis Howell Central) battled through hard-fought sets against Kayleigh Ruffolo as Ruffolo won 7-5, 6-2. It was just the second match of the season at No. 2 singles for Gerger, who has also played a match at No. 6 singles on the year.Â
The only singles match that was not played as No. 1 as sophomore
Maggie Federhofer (St. Louis, Mo./Lutheran South) did not face IWU's No. 1 player, Sofia Pinheiro, due to injury.Â
Freshman
Emma Ferguson (Troy, Mo./Troy Buchanan) battled in her match at No. 3 singles against Rebecca Rochacz as she fell 6-2, 6-3 and freshman
Addie Struckman (O'Fallon, Mo./Francis Howell) fell 6-1, 6-3 at the No. 4 spot to Ashley Mohr.Â
At No. 2 singles, freshman
Navone Armstrong (St. Louis, Mo./McCleur North) fell 6-2, 6-1 to Anna Cooper.
Meanwhile in doubles action, the Titans won all three matches and limited the Gorloks to just five games in those matches, including posting an 8-0 win at No. 2 doubles over WU's tandem of Ferguson and Struckman.
The closest doubles match came at the No. 3 spot as Gerger and Willis fell 8-4 to IWU's tandem of Ruffolo and Rowley.Â
Federhofer and Armstrong played their second straight match together at the No. 1 spot and fell 8-1 to Pinheiro and Rochacz.
Webster will continue play at the Spring TennisFest on Wednesday, March 13 as they face the College of Wooster in a 12:45 p.m. ET match at the Hilton Head Resort.
