O'FALLON, Mo. - Webster University continued its hot play in men's tennis here Friday as the Gorloks extended its win streak to nine straight matches as they picked up a hard fought 8-1 win over St. Louis College of Pharmacy at St. Clair Tennis Center.
With the victory, Webster improves to 9-2 overall, while St. Louis Pharmacy falls to 3-7 on the season.
In Friday's match, which was moved indoors due to inclement weather, needed tie breakers to win four of their matches, including winning three of its singles matches in third set tiebreakers. In fact, in all three of those those singles matches went to tiebreakers, the Gorloks lost the first set, before rallying to win both the second set and tiebreaker.
Webster picked up wins in singles at No. 2, No. 3, No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 and then swept all three double matches. It marked just the second time this season that Webster has won all three of its doubles matches.
In singles play, senior
Charlie McGhee (Waterloo, Ill./Waterloo) picked up WU's first win in straight sets as he defeated Clark Berry, 6-1, 6-2 to improve his record to 8-2 on the season and earn his second straight win.Â
Sophomore
Tom Shutzman (St. Louis, Mo./Parkway South) earned the Gorloks second match as he won a third set tiebreaker over George Win. Against Win, Shutzman lost the opening set, 6-4, before posting a 6-2 win in the second set and earning an impressive 10-0 in the tiebreaker.
Webster's second tiebreaker match in singles came at the No. 2 spot as sophomore
Austin Nation (Oklahoma City, Okla./Purcell) as he fell 7-6 (7-4) in the first set, before rallying to win 6-2 in the second set and then clawing back to win 10-6 in the third set tiebreaker. With the win, Nation extended his win streak to seven straight matches and is now 8-2 on the year.Â
Webster's fourth win in singles came at the No. 5 spot as freshman
Tanner Haugen (Jefferson City, Mo./Jefferson City) posted a shutout 6-0, 6-0 win at the No. 5 spot to improve his record to 6-0 on the season.
Junior
Nicolas Andrade (Quito, Ecuador/Francis Howell) would play the third tiebreaker match in singles as the No. 6 spot. At No. 6, Andrade fell 7-6 (4-7) in the first set to James Bamberger, before picking up a 6-0 win in the second set and then earning a 10-4 win in the tiebreaking third set.Â
STCOP's lone win in the match came at No. 1 singles as Rahal Jilakawa picked up a 6-4, 6-4 win over Webster junior
Riley Muren (O'Fallon, Ill./Illinois-Springfield). The loss snapped Muren's six match win streak in singles as he is now 8-3 on the season.
Meanwhile, in doubles, Webster's No. 1 and No. 2 teams each won by identical 8-2 scores and its No. 3 team of Haugen and freshman
Justin Kohler (Waterloo, Ill./Waterloo) won 8-7 (10-8) in a tiebreaker of STLCOP's Tali Eke and Bamberger.
At No. 3 doubles, Haugen and Kohler trailed 4-3, 5-4, 7-5 and then tied it at 7-7 to force a tiebreaker. In the tiebreaker, the Webster duo trailed 8-5 before winning five straight points to seal the win.
The Gorloks will look to make its 10 straight wins as they return to action on Tuesday, April 2 with a 6 p.m. match against Fontbonne at the Dwight Davis Tennis Center in Forest Park.Â
