Softball Opens Florida Spring Break Trip By Splitting Two Games Friday

CLERMONT, Fla. - Playing their first games in nearly three weeks, Webster University was able to manage a split of its first two games here Friday in the 2019 PFX Spring Games at Legends Way Ballfields at the National Training Center.

The Gorloks opened its Spring Break Florida trip with a hard-fought 3-2 loss to Rhodes College, before picking up a 2-1 win in the nightcap of a walk-off wild pitch in the bottom of the seventh inning against Concordia-Moorhead.

With the split, Webster improves to 1-3 on the season and the win over Concordia-Moorhead was also the first career coaching victory for Gorloks interim head coach Katie Griffith

Against Concordia-Moorhead, Webster put its first two hitters on base in the bottom of the seventh thanks to back-to-back singles from junior catcher Darian Morlan (Duchesne, Utah/Trinidad State) and freshman right fielder Taylor Jackson (Calgary, Alberta/Bishop Grandin). After junior pitcher Breelyn Craig (Victorville, Calif./Trinidad State) moved the runners up a base on a sacrifice bunt, Cobber pitcher Megan Gavin threw a pitch to the backstop that allowed Morlan to score from third ust under the tag at home plate to seal the win and give Griffith her first career coaching victory.

The wild pitch win was needed after the Cobbers (6-4) tied the game in the top of the seventh thanks to a lead-off double by Maria Pake and an RBI single from Elizabeth Asp off of Craig.

Craig (1-0), who made her first collegiate start in the circle in Friday's nightcap, tossed a complete game as she allowed 10 hits and one run, while walking three and striking out seven.

Gavin (5-1) was just as effective in the circle for Concordia-Moorhead as she pitched 6.1 innings and allowed just five hits and two runs, while walking three and fanning six.

The Gorloks jumped on the scoreboard first in the nightcap in the third inning as back-to-back two out doubles from junior first baseman Avery Boccella (Gilbert, Ariz./Trinidad State) and freshman designated player Renee Ruelas (San Bernardino, Calif./Grand Terrace) gave WU a 1-0 lead.

Boccella finished with two of Webster's five hits in the win.

Concordia-Moorhead was paced offensively by two hits each from Pake, Taylor Erholtz and Nicole Johannes.

Along with finishing with 10- hits, the Cobbers left 11 runners stranded on base, including leaving the bases loaded in the first and third innings against Craig. In the first inning, Craig got out of the jam by forcing Madison Kostelecky to fly out to center and in the third, Craig struck out Kate Wensloff.

The Gorloks played flawless in the field as they did not commit an error for the first time in a game this season.

Meanwhile, in the setback against Rhodes, the Lynx (14-3) won the game on a bases loaded walk issued by Craig to Kendall Henry in the bottom of the seventh to seal its second win this season over the Gorloks. Webster opened the 2019 season with a 10-1 loss to the Lynx in Memphis, Tenn., on Feb. 16.

Craig, who walked both batters she faced in the seventh after relieving junior Tori Lonsdale (Swansea, Ill./Southwestern Illinois), who replaced junior Kaitlyn Johnson (East Alton, Ill./Greenville University) in the circle with two outs in the sixth. Lonsdale (0-2) took the loss as she as she walked two of the four batters she faced.

The Lynx jumped out to an 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first thanks to an RBI double by Henry, which came one batter after Jill Healy reached on a two-out single to left off of Johnson.

Webster, though, would tie the game at 1-all in the top of the second inning as junior leftfielder Abby Burroughs (Edwardsville, Ill./Triad) led off the frame by reaching on an error and after moving to second on a bunt by Morlan, would score on a triple down the right field line by Jackson. The triple by Jackson was just the second extra base hit of the season for the Gorloks.

The score would remain tied until the top of the sixth inning when the Gorloks used a single by Jackson, a bunt, a passed ball and an RBI single by freshman second baseman Andrea Stephens (New Berlin, Wis./New Berlin West) to take a 2-1 lead.

Rhodes would answer right back in the bottom of the sixth thanks to a two-out triple by Lauren King and an RBI single by Haley Rath off of Johnson. Rath's single chased Johnson from the game, who pitched 5.2 innings and allowed just seven hits and two runs, while walking two and fanning two.

In the top of the seventh, the Gorloks threatened as they put runners on second and third thanks to singles by both freshman shortstop Sheyla Iniquez (Riverside, Calif./Bloomington) and Ruelas, but King, who relieved Rhodes' starting pitcher Bri Maniscalco after she allowed Ruelas single, would get out of the jam by striking out sophomore Skiela Martinez (Whittier, Calif./California), who was pinch hitting for Morlan.

King (7-1) earned the win for the Lynx as she pitched two-thirds of an inning and had one strikeout. Maniscalco tossed 6.1 innings and allowed eight hits and two runs (one earned run), while walking three and striking out four.

In the game, the two teams stranded a combined 19 runners as Webster left 10 runners on bases and the Lynx left nine runners on.

Jackson and Iniquez each had two of Webster's eight hits, while seven different Rhodes players collected a hit in the win.

The Gorloks will continue play in the PFX Spring Games on Saturday, March 9 as they face Plymouth State at 12:30 p.m. ET and Kean University at 3 p.m. ET. Both of Saturday's games will be played at the Fortune Road Complex Field No. 2 in Kissimmee. Fla.
