Men's Tennis Goes 2-1 at SLIAC Tournament, Earns Third Place Finish

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Webster University closed out its men's tennis season here Friday by winning two matches of its three matches to earn a third place finish at the 2019 St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Men's Tennis Tournament at Dwight Davis Tennis Center in Forest Park.

The Gorloks, who earned the No. 3 seed in the tournament, began play on Friday with a 5-0 loss to No. 2 seeded Greenville University in the semifinal round, before picking up a 5-0 win over Fontbonne University in the fifth-place match and then collecting a 6-1 win over Westminster (Mo.) College in the third-place match. The third-place match was originally scheduled for Saturday, but to a forecast that callled for rain and storms throughout the early part of the day, SLIAC officials decided to play the third-place match on Friday afternoon at Dwight Davis.

With the two wins, Webster closes the season with a 14-7 overall record and the 14 wins are tied for the second most in the program's 34-year history as the 2012 team also won 14 matches and finished the season with a 14-4. The 14 wins were five more than the Gorloks won last season as they posted a 9-7 record.

Friday's action marked the final matches in the Webster career of Charlie McGhee (Waterloo, Ill./Waterloo), who was the Gorloks lone senior on this year's team. McGhee closed out his Webster career with a 36-20 record in singles and a 21-33 mark in doubles. The 36 singles wins are fourth most in program history, while his 20 doubles wins are seventh most in the program's history.

Webster has now finished third in the SLIAC Tournament for the second consecutive season and third time in the last four years overall.

Top-seeded Principia College will meet Greenville in the championship match of the SLIAC Tournament on Saturday, April 27 at 12:30 p.m. Kings Point Tennis Center in Belleville, Ill. Principia advanced to the finals with a 5-0 win in Friday's other semifinal match against Westminster.

WESTMINSTER (Third Place Match)
Webster 6, Westminster 1

In the third place against the Blue Jays, Webster, who were playing their third match of the day, opened by winning two of the three doubles matches as head coach Mike Siener rearranged his doubles lineup against Westminster.

Webster's No. 1 team of junior Riley Muren (O'Fallon, Ill./Illinois-Springfield) and sophomore Austin Nation(Oklahoma City, Okla./Purcell) picked up an 8-6 win over Phillip Udinyiwe and Joshua Udinyiwe. On the season, Muren and Nation, who went 2-1 in doubles at the SLIAC Tournament, posted a 6-8 record at the No. 1 spot in the lineup. The six doubles wins were the most on the team this season.

At No. 2 doubles, Siener paired sophomore Tom Shutzman (St. Louis, Mo./Parkway South) with freshman Harsh Jaswal (O'Fallon, Mo./Fort Zumwalt West) and they picked up an 8-7 win over Giovanni Strickland and Brandon Rettke.

The Gorloks No. 3 team of freshman Parker Schaefer (Barnhart, Mo./Windsor) and Sean Raglin (Barnhart, Mo./Windsor) fell 8-6 to Westminster's duo of Mike Rois and Bryce Loney. That was the first time this season they Raglin and Schaffer played doubles together.

Meanwhile, in singles play, Webster picked up wins at No. 1, No. 2, No. 3 and No. 6 singles to seal its third place win.

In singles, Siener also changed up the lineup as McGhee played No. 1 singles in place of Muren, while freshman Tanner Haugen (Jefferson City, Mo./Jefferson City) played No. 3 singles, junior Nicolas Andrade(Quito, Ecuador/Francis Howell) played No. 4 singles, freshman Justin Kohler (Waterloo, Ill./Waterloo) played No. 5 singles and sophomore Courtland Butler (St. Louis, Mo./McKinley) played No. 6 singles.

Muren closed out the season with a 12-6 record in singles and has now recorded a 20-12 record in singles since arriving on campus prior last season. Muren is now one of 14 players in Webster men's tennis history to win at least 20 career singles matches.

At No. 1 singles, McGhee picked up a 7-6, 6-1 win over Phillp Udinyiwe to improve to 12-7 on the season in singles. It marked the first time in McGhee's four-year collegiate career that he played at the No. 1 spot in the lineup.

Webster's second singles win came at the No. 2 spot as Nation picked up a 6-3, 6-2 win over Joshua Udinyiwe to improve to 12-7 on the season. The 12 wins this season were 10 more than Nation won all of last year as he posted a 2-13 record in singles as a freshman in 2018.

Haugen picked up Webster's third singles win as he defeated Strickland at the No. 3 spot. It was the first match of the season for Haugen at the No. 3 spot as he closes his freshman campaign with a 10-4 record in singles.

Butler would earn the Gorloks fourth and final singles wins as he defeated Rois, 6-4, 6-2 to improve his season record to 2-0.

Andrade's won the first set, 6-1 at No. 4 over Loney, but the second set was unfinished when the Gorloks sealed the match win.

Kohler and Rettke had not yet begun their match at No. 5 singles.

FONTBONNE (Fifth Place Match)
Webster 5, Fontbonne 0

Against Fontbonne in the fifth place match, Webster only had to play a total of three matches as Webster received forfeit wins at both No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles as Fontbonne only had five players in uniform on Friday.

In the match against the Griffins, who finished with a 1-13 record on the season, Webster opened by winning at both No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. At No. 1 doubles, Muren and Nation defeated Sebastian Culton and Anh Nguyen, 8-3 and McGhee and Shutzman picked an 8-1 win at No. 2 doubles over Zach Stevens and Brandon Baumgartner.

Webster's other win came at No. 5 singles as Haugen, who played his match while the two doubles matches were being contested, picked up back-to-back 6-0 wins over Ziemann to seal the match win and advance the Gorloks to the third-place match against Westminster.

GREENVILLE (Semifinal Match)
Greenville 5, Webster 0

Webster opened its semifinal match with Greenville (15-3) by playing three hard-fought matches in doubles as the Gorloks won a total of 15 games against the Panthers in doubles, including Muren and Nation winning six games in their 8-6 loss to Daniel Pieplow and Zach Plocher.

At No. 1 doubles, the Greenville duo led 7-4, when Webster battled back to win the next two games to pull within 7-6. But, that would be as close as it would get as the Panthers sealed the win after Muren hit the ball into the net with the score 40-30.

In addition to Muren and Nation, McGhee and Shutzman had a battle at No. 2 doubles with Tyler Blume and Justin Tilford as the Greenville hung on for an 8-5 win.

At No. 3 doubles, Haugen and Andrade fell 8-4 to Greenville's duo of Austin Burkhart and Mathew Rodriguez.

Trailing 3-0 in the match, Webster needed to win five of the six singles matches to earn the victory, while Greenville needed to win only two matches to advance.

In singles, Greenville picked up the fourth point of the match at the No. 3 spot as Tilford defeated McGhee, 6-0, 6-2 and then sealed the match win at No. 2 singles as Plocher picked up a 6-1, 6-2 win over Nation.

The other four singles matches were halted once Greenville earned the match victory and the Panthers had won the first set in all four of those matches.
