WEBSTER GROVES, Mo. – Webster University junior pitcher Matt Mulhearn (Chicago Heights, Ill./Marian Catholic) on Thursday afternoon as named to the 2019 Google Cloud Academic All-District Team for NCAA Division III Baseball as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

The Academic All-District Team presented by Google Cloud recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances both athletically and in the classroom. To be nominated by their respective school's SID, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore and a starter or key contributor with at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) at his/her current institution. 

Mulhearn earns his First-Team Academic All-District selection in baseball after carrying a 3.74 cumulative grade point average in finance at Webster. Along with earning Academic All-District honors from CoSIDA, Mulhearn was also named Webster Athletics' President's Award winner at this year's Gorlok Awards Banquet on April 28 and also serves as the President of Webster's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and was named the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Spring All-Academic Team last season and will be a repeat selection to that team this year when it is announced in early June.

Along with his accolades in the classroom, Mulhearn is one of the top pitchers, not only in the SLIAC but all of NCAA Division III Baseball as he posted a 9-2 record and a 2.20 ERA this season for the 18th-ranked Gorloks that took home its 13th consecutive SLIAC regular season title in 2019. On the season, Mulhearn has made 13 appearances on the mound, including 11 starts and has tossed five complete games and one shutout. In a team-leading 77.2 innings of work, Mulhearn has allowed 64 hits, 20 runs, 19 earned runs, while walking just nine and striking out 85, which is second most in the league and 16th in Division III. His nine victories are fifth most in Division III, while his 9.44 strikeout-to-walk ratio is fourth best among all Division III pitchers.

In his nearly three seasons as a Gorlok, Mulhearn, who was named a Second-Team All-SLIAC and First-Team ABCA/Rawlings All-Central Region selection last season as a sophomore, has posted a 19-6 overall record and has a career ERA of 2.79. In 42 appearances and 26 starts, the right-hander has recorded 187 strikeouts and walked just 39 batters in 190 innings of work and has tossed six complete games. He is tied for fifth in career wins (19), seventh in career strikeouts (187), eighth in career innings pitched (190), ninth in career ERA (2.79) and tied for 10th in career appearances (46). His 10 wins in 2018 are tied for the most in a single season in school history, while his 85 strikeouts this season is sixth on the school's single season charts.

Mulhearn is one two players from the SLIAC to earn Google Cloud Academic All-District 5 honors in baseball as Westminster senior outfielder Zach Eisenreich was also named to the first team. In addition to Mulhearn and Eisenreich, Spalding junior outfielder Garrett Wilson was named a First-Team selection from NCAA Division III District 2. 

With his first team Academic All-District selection, Mulhearn will now be placed on the national ballot for the Google Cloud Academic All-America Baseball Team, which will be announced on Tuesday, June 4.

Mulhearn is the first Webster student-athlete from the 2018-19 school year to be named a CoSIDA Academic All-District selection and third since the beginning of the 2017-18 school year as Brianna Pagan (women's soccer) and Meghan Illig (women's track and cross country) were honored last year.

Voting for the Academic All-District team is conducted by the College Sports Information Directors of America. Webster's representatives are District 5 selections from Division III institutions comprised from the states of Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Missouri, Mississippi, North Carolina, Puerto Rico, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia.
