Women's Soccer Concludes Two-Match Season Opening Road Swing With Setback to Dominican

RIVER FOREST, Ill. - Webster University concluded its two-match women's soccer season opening road swing here Sunday afternoon by falling 1-0 in a hard-fought non-conference contest at Dominican University at West Campus Field.

With the setback, Webster falls to 1-1, while Dominican, who has now won 18 consecutive regular season matches dating to last season, improves to 2-0 on the season.

Sunday's match was a rematch from last season, a match that the Gorloks won 3-1 on Labor Day at World Wide Technology Soccer Park. Both Webster and Dominican combined to win a total of 34 matches a season ago.

In Sunday's match, Webster recorded five shots and had three shots on goal, all of which came in the second half against the Stars and their goalkeeper, Abbey Brown, who recorded three saves in the match.

Senior forward Savannah Page (Sandy, Utah/Jordan) paced Webster's offense with two shots, while sophomore midfielder Ryleigh Grommet (Rolla, Mo./Rolla), sophomore midfielder Jordan Bilyeu (St. Louis, Mo./Lindbergh) and sophomore forward Jordan Lande (Sachse, Texas/Sachse) each had one shot in the match.

Dominican's defense held senior forward Melissa Kasper (Oswego, Ill./Oswego) without a shot and point for the first time in a span of 11 matches dating to last season's match against WashU. In addition, it is just the sixth time since the beginning of the 2017 season that Kasper was held without a shot.

The lone goal of Sunday's match came on a penalty kick by Josseline Williams in the 19th minute of the match. Williams draw a foul from freshman defender Reaghan Young (Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley), who received a yellow card on the play.

In the 37th minute, Webster freshman goalkeeper Taryn Banfield (Plano, Texas/Plano East) stopped a shot on goal by Maggie McClure to keep the score at 1-0.

The Gorloks had scoring chances in both the 71st and 72nd minutes as Lande's shot in the 71st minute was saved by Brown and a shot by Page in the 72nd minute was also saved by Brown.

Late in the 83rd minute, Bilyeu took a shot that Brown tips over the crossbar to keep the Gorloks off the scoreboard.

Banfield, who played all 90 minutes in the match and recorded five saves, would keep the score 1-0 in final 62 seconds of the match as she saved a shot by Ashleigh Huerta.

Dominican would finish the match with 16 shots and six shots on goal, including four shots apiece by Williams and Huerta. Three of Huerta's four shots were on goal.

The Stars held a 5-2 edge in corner kicks in the win.

Webster will return to action next Saturday, Sept. 7 as they host Elmhurst in a 12 p.m. match at WWT Soccer Park. Elmhurst opened the 2019 season with a 2-0 setback at Dominican on Friday.
