FENTON, Mo. - Webster University Women's Soccer opened up the home portion of its 2019 schedule here Saturday afternoon as the Gorloks recorded a 6-3 victory over Elmhurst College in non-conference action at World Wide Technology Soccer Park.
The win was keyed by the first-ever hat trick from senior midfielder
Savannah Page (Sandy, Utah/Jordan) and two goals from sophomore forward
Jordan Lande (Sachse, Texas/Sachse). Page's hat trick was the first of the season for the Gorloks and the 55th in the program's 21-year history.
With the win, Webster improves to 2-1-0- on the season and extends its win streak in home openers to nine consecutive since suffering a 1-0 loss to Dominican to open its 2010 home schedule. In addition, the Gorloks have won four straight home matches in regular season play dating to last season's home match with WashU.
The six goals were the most scored by the Gorloks in a regular season non-conference match since tallying six goals in a 6-0 win against Franklin (Ind.) on Aug. 31, 2013.
Page got the goal scoring started early for the Gorloks as she took a pass from senior midfielder
Olivia Osterhage (Eureka, Mo./Eureka) and found the net from 16 yards out just 92 seconds into the match. The assist by Osterhage was her second of the season and 29th of her career.
Less than three minutes later, Osterhage connected on a shot from 19 yards out off a pass from Page to give the Gorloks a 2-0 lead less than five minutes into the match.
The Bluejays, who are now 2-6-1 all-time against the Gorloks, got into the scoring act in the 21st minute as Yasmin Chavez scored off a rebound right in front of the goal from Gabby Ketola to cut WU's lead to 2-1.
Lande gave the Gorloks a 3-1 lead as she took a pass from senior forward
Melissa Kasper (Oswego, Ill./Oswego) and connected on a one-timer from six yards out in the 24th minute.
Page would give the Gorloks a 4-1 lead just 17 seconds into the second half as she drew a foul inside the box and connected on a penalty shot.
Elmhurst, though, would come right back and pull within 4-2 thanks to a goal by Ketola less than 78 seconds after Page's penalty kick goal. Ketola's goal came off a rebound from Brooke Janeczek.
In the 62nd minute, the Bluejays used a penalty shot goal from Hannah Bacon to cut the Gorloks lead to 4-3.
Page added her third goal in the 82nd minute off an assist by Kasper to give WU a 5-3 lead. Kasper's two assists in the match pushed her career total to 40, which is tied with Hall of Fame Niki Martinez for third on the school's all-time chart. In addition, Kasper scored two points in the match to push her career total to 110 points, which is seventh on the time list.
Webster completed the scoring late in the 87th minute as Lande scored an unassisted goal from eight yards out to give the Gorloks a 6-3 lead.
For the match, Webster held a 19-13 edge in shots, including a 15-6 edge in shots on goal. Page led the way with a career-high tying seven shots, including six on goal, while Osterhage and Lande each had two shots in the win.
Chavez and Bacon each had three shots apiece for the Bluejays, while Ketola, Heather Hoffmann and Lauryn Wesoloski each had two shots in the loss.
Elmhurst held a 6-3 edge in corner kicks on the day.
Freshman goalkeeper
Taryn Banfield (Plano, Texas/Plano) picked up her first career win in net as she played all 90 minutes and allowed three goals and recorded three saves to move to 1-0-1 on the year.
Elmhurst goalkeeper Sophia Tuliglowski took the loss in net as she allowed six goals and had nine saves to fall to 0-2-1 on the season.
Webster will look to make it two consecutive wins as they return to action on Wednesday, Sept. 11 as they travel to Decatur, Ill., for a 7:30 p.m. match against Millikin University.
