JACKSONVILLE, Ill. - Webster University concluded its two-match road swing here Wednesday evening as the Gorloks scored a season high two goals en route to posting a 2-1 men's soccer non-conference victory over Illinois College at England Stadium.
With the win, Webster improves to 2-1-1 on the season, while Illinois College falls to 1-4-2 on the year.
The Gorloks entered Wednesday's game having scored just two goals in its first three matches this season, but its offense matched that season total for goals against the Blue Boys.
IC got the scoring started in Wednesday's contest as Thomas Saitta tallied his first goal of the season late in the 24th minute to give the Blue Boys a 1-0 lead.Â
Webster, though, would tie the match in the 41st minute as sophomore midfielder
Matt Huster (Pacific, Mo./Seckman) took a pass from junior midfielder
Hunter Olaso (Kailua-Kona, Hawaii/Kealakehe) and found the net for his first career collegiate goal.Â
Senior defender
Justin Schmidt (St. Louis, Mo./Metro) would give the Gorloks a 2-1 lead as he scored his first goal of the season late in the 77th minute. Schmidt's goal came off an assist from freshman forward
Colby Kapp (Quincy, Ill./Quincy Notre Dame).Â
From that point, Webster's defense would hold the Blue Boys without a shot over the final 12 minutes to seal the victory to earn their second win of the young season.
After taking 26 shots and being held scoreless in their 1-0 loss on Sunday at Hendrix, the Gorloks offense recorded 19 shots and had eight shots on goal, while they held IC to just four shots and two shots on goal. In the second half, Webster held a 13-0 edge in shots.Â
Sophomore forward
Aamahn Murvin (Sahuarita, Ariz./Walden Grove) and junior midfielder
Ben Aziz (Paris, France/Marquette) each had three shots and combined for four shots on goal. In addition to Murvin and Aziz, junior midfielder
Joacquin Soto (Flagstaff, Ariz./Flagstaff), freshman forward
Jarret Gabriele (Rolla, Mo./Rolla), Kapp and Olaso each had two shots in the win.Â
The Blue Boys had four different players record a shot on the night.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Matt Coffey (Eureka, Mo./Eureka) played all 90 minutes in the net and allowed one goal and had one save to improve his record to 1-0-1 on the year.
IC's Raul Rubalcava (1-4-2) took the loss in net for the Blue Boys as he recorded six saves and allowed two goals for the match.
WU also held a 12-1 edge on corner kicks and the Blue Boys committed 16 fouls, while the Gorloks had 10 fouls.
The Gorloks will look to make it two straight wins this coming Sunday, Sept. 14 as they host Berry (Ga.) College for a 1 p.m. match at World Wide Technology Soccer Park in Fenton, Mo.
