FENTON, Mo. - Webster University began a two-match men's soccer homestand here Sunday afternoon by posting an impressive 1-0 shutout victory over Berry (Ga.) College in non-conference action at World Wide Technology Soccer Park.
With the victory, Webster win its second straight match and improves to 3-1-1 on the season, while Berry falls to 4-2-1 and completes its two-game trip to St. Louis with an 0-1-1 record after picking up a 2-2 double overtime tie on Friday at Fontbonne. The Gorloks are now 2-0-1 at home this season and is 7-4-2 at home since the begining of last season.
The lone goal of Sunday's match came in the 17th minutes as sophomore forward
Aamahn Murvin (Sahuarita, Ariz./Walden Grove) connected from about 15 yards out off of a rebound shot from junior midfielder
Hunter Olaso (Kailua-Kona, Hawaii/Kealakehe) to give the Gorloks a 1-0 lead. The goal was the first of the season by Murvin, who led the Gorloks with nine goals a season ago.
Sunday's match featured a combined 26 shots and seven shots on goal, along with a combined 29 fouls that led to five yellow cards, including three yellow cards by the Vikings. Both teams had 13 shots in each half as Webster had six shots in both the first and second half, while Berry took seven shots in each half.Â
It looked like the Vikings appeared headed to tying the match in the 67th minute, but a shot by Bradley Sisk looked as if it was destined for the goal, but WU junior goalkeeper
Matt Amick (St. Louis, Mo./Lindbergh) jumped up and made the save to turn the Vikings away.Â
In the 81st minute, freshman midfielder
Jonny McCarthy (Hazelwood, Mo./Hazelwood West) took a shot from outside the box, but that shot was high and hit the crossbar to keep the score 1-0 in Webster's favor.
The Vikings had two shots in the final five minutes of the match, but those shots were wide left and high.Â
McCarthy led the Gorloks with three shots, while Murvin and junior forward
Ben Aziz (Paris, France/Marquette) each had two shots and combined for three shots on goal. For the match, eight Gorloks took at least one shot.Â
Jake Williamson paced Berry with four shots, while Connor Davis had three shots in the loss. Berry had nine different players take a shot.Â
Amick (2-1-0) earned the win in net for the Gorloks as he played all 90 minutes and recorded three saves to post his second shutout of the year and his 15th career shutout, which is third on the school's all-time list.Â
Baker Hoyt (1-1-1) took the loss in the net for the Vikings as he played the first 60-plus minutes and allowed one goal and made three saves. Eli Wellman replaced Hoyt in goal just about 15 minutes into the second half and didn't record a save.Â
Berry finished the match with a 9-7 edge in corner kicks.Â
The Gorloks will look to make it three consecutive wins this coming Thursday, Sept. 18 as they host Saint Mary of the Woods College for a 7 p.m. non-conference match at WWT Soccer Park.Â
