Men's Soccer Scores Season High Four Goals in Home Win Over Saint Mary-of-the-Woods

FENTON, Mo. - Webster University scored a season high four goals here Thursday evening as the Gorloks posted a 4-1 men's soccer victory over Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College in a non-conference match at World Wide Technology Soccer.

With the victory, Webster improves to 4-1-1 on the season and extends it win streak to three straight matches, while the Pomeroys suffered their first loss of the season as they are now 6-1-0 this season. 

The four goals were the most scored by the Gorloks in a match since scoring five times in last season's regular season finale at Principia College on Oct. 29, 2018. In addiiton, it is the most goals scored by the Gorloks in a non-conference regular season match since scoring four last season against Hendrix on Sept. 16, 2018.

In Thursday's win, the Gorloks held a 21-14 edge in shots, including a 9-6 advantage in shots on goal and scored three of its four goals in the second half. 

Sophomore midfielder Henok Moges (St. Louis, Mo./Parkway North) got the scoring started early in the eighth minute as he scored on a header after taking a pass from junior midfielder Hunter Olaso (Kailua-Kona, Hawaii/Kealakehe). The goal by Moges was the first of his collegiate career. 

Just about four minutes into the second half, Olaso scored an unassisted goal off a rebound from 10 yards out to give the Gorloks a 2-0 lead. The goal by Olaso was his first of the season. 

Moges had a hand in the Gorloks' third goal as he had an assist on a goal from 12 yards out by sophomore forward Aamahn Murvin (Sahuarita, Ariz./Walden Grove) to give WU a 3-0 lead in the 53rd minute. The goal was Murvin's team leading second goal this season and 11th of his brief collegiate career. 

Junior Ben Aziz (Paris, France/Marquette) give the Gorloks a 4-0 lead late in the 84th minute as he scored an unassisted goal from about 19 yards out. 

The Pomeroys, who lost 5-0 to the Gorloks last season, completed the match's scoring as Muhammad Izhar Razman connected from about 18 yards out with senior Eli Smith (Orlando, Fla./Dr. Phillips) in goal for the Gorloks. Smith replaced sophomore Matt Coffey (Eureka, Mo./Eureka) in net with a little over four minutes left in the game. 

Coffey (2-0-1) earned the win in net for the Gorloks as he played 85-plus minutes and recorded four saves and didn't allow a goal. Smith allowed one goal and made one save in his four-plus minutes of action.

Junior midfielder Logan Takizawa (Holualoa, Hawaii/Konawaena) took a career high six shots in the win, while sophomore midfielder Isaac Pearson (St. Louis, Mo./Maplewood-Richmond Heights) added three shots and four Gorloks each had two shots on the night.

For the match, 10 different Gorloks took a shot and seven of those Gorloks put at least one shot on goal. 

Omar Abdallah Nablisi took six shots and put four shots on goal for the Pomeroys, while Izhar Razman added three shots and two shots on goal. 

Webster held a 6-5 edge in corner kicks and SMWC committed 15 fouls to 14 by the Gorloks. 

The Gorloks will look to make it four straight wins as Webster travels to Olivet, Mich., for an 11 a.m. CDT match at Olivet College. Olivert is 3-3-0 this season and hosts Wabash at home on Saturday before facing the Gorloks.
