FENTON, Mo. - Nearly three days after having its season opener postponed due to inclement weather, Webster University was finally able to open its 2019 men's soccer season here Monday afternoon as the Gorloks used a penalty kick in the 87th minute to post a 1-0 shutout victory over the University of Minnesota-Morris at World Wide Technology Soccer Park.
Despite outshooting the Cougars, 35-3, the only scoring in Monday's match came in the 87th minute as junior midfielder
Joacquin Soto (Flagstaff, Ariz./Flagstaff) drew a foul in the box and that set him up for a penalty kick. That penalty kick went into the left side of the goal past a diving Lucas Harmon, who was the Cougars goalkeeper in Monday's contest.
Webster improved to 1-0 on the season and has now opened with a win for the second consecutive season, while UMM is now 0-3 on the year. In addition, Webster has now held the Cougars scoreless for 180 minutes the past two seasons as WU picked up a 1-0 win last season in Morris, Minn.
The goal by Soto came nearly 16 minutes after the Gorloks had three shots at the goal in the 71st minute as the first shot by junior midfielder
Logan Takizawa (Holualoa, Hawaii/Konawaena) was high, while junior forward
Matt Ceriotti (St. Louis, Mo./SLUH) then took a shot that was blocked and the third shot by junior
Hunter Olaso (Kailua-Kona, Hawaii/Kealakehe) just missed the goal as it sailed wide left.Â
Soto's penalty kick made a winner out of junior goalie
Matt Amick (St. Louis, Mo./Lindbergh) as he recorded three saves and posted his 14th career shutout, which is fifth on the school's all-time list and also improved his career record to 16-3-3. The 16 goalie wins are tied for fifth on school's all-time list.Â
The Cougars had just three shots in the match, including two shots on goal against Amick, including putting a shot that nearly went in the goal in the 83rd minute by Noah Ebinger.Â
Webster had several scoring chances in the first half, including freshman forward
Jarret Gabriele (Rolla, Mo./Rolla) having a shot blocked in the 38th minute and then having two shots miss wide left in the 41st and 44th minutes.Â
The 35 shots were 11th most in a match in school and the most since taking a school record 60 shots last season against Blackburn.Â
Gabriele, Olaso, Soto and senior midfielder
Juan Garcia (St. Charles, Mo./Duchesne) each took five shots, while sophomore forward
Aamahn Murvin (Sahuarita, Ariz./Walden Grove) had three shots.Â
Garcia, Soto and Gabriele combined for seven of WU's nine shots on goal as Garcia had three, while Soto and Gabriele each recorded two.Â
In addition to the shot by Ebinger, the Cougars' other two shots were recorded by Carter Watkinson and Gabe Arreguin.
Harmon, who fell to 0-3 on the season, recorded six saves in goal for UMM.Â
Webster also held a 6-0 edge on corner kicks and both teams committed eight fouls in the match.
The Gorloks will look to remain undefeated on the season as they host Rhodes College for a 7 p.m. match on Friday, Sept. 6 at WWT Soccer Park. Last season, Webster picked up a 2-0 win over the Lynx in Memphis on Sept. 14, 2018.
