Men's Soccer Draws With Rhodes College in Double Overtime

FENTON, Mo. - Webster University concluded its season opening two-match homestand here Friday evening as the Gorloks played to a 1-1 draw in double overtime with Rhodes College in non-conference action at World Wide Technology Soccer Park.

The tie was the first of the 2019 season both both teams as Webster moved to 1-0-1 on the season, while Rhodes fell to 1-1-1 on the young season.

Friday's match was a tale of different halves as the Gorloks recorded four shots and held Rhodes to just one shot in the opening 45 minutes, while the Lynx outshot the Gorloks, 10-8 in the second 45 minutes. In addition, both teams scored the lone goals of the match in the second half.

After seeing both teams played to a scoreless tie for the opening 60 minutes, the Gorloks would take a 1-0 lead in the 60th minute as sophomore Isaac Pearson (St. Louis, Mo./Maplewood) connected on a shot from 15 yards out that found the bottom right of the net for the match's first goal. Pearson's came off an assist from freshman forward Jarret Gabriele (Rolla, Mo./Rolla). The assist by Gabriele was his first collegiate point.

It looked like Pearson's goal would be the only scoring of the night, but with a little less than 80 seconds left in the match, Rhodes' Jereme Gordon took a pass from Travis Tuerff and connected on a shot from 12 yards to tie the match and force overtime.

In the first overtime period, the only two shots were taken by Rhodes and both of those shots were high by Nic DiMauro.

The Lynx appeared like they were headed towards victory late in the 104th minutes of the match, but a shot by Sam Khomtchenko was saved by sophomore goalkeeper Matt Coffey (Eureka, Mo./Eureka). Coffey jumped in air at he right moment and stopped Khomtchenko's from going into the net. In the 109th minute, a shot by Jack Lippe was high and went over the goal to seal the 1-1 draw.

Webster held possession for 61 percent of the first half, but Rhodes outshot the Gorloks, 14-8 after halftime to finish the match losing the possession battle by four percent to Webster as the Gorloks finished the night with a 52-48 edge in possession.

Pearson took four of WU's 12 shots, sophomore forward Aamahn Murvin (Sahuarita, Ariz./Walden Grove) and freshman forward Colby Kapp (Quincy, Ill./Quincy Notre Dame) each had two shots in the match.

Three of Webster's 12 shots were on goal, including two of those three shots on gaol coming from Pearson.

Lippe and, DiMauro and Khomtchenko each had three shots in the match, while Gordon had two shots on the night. Khimtchenko recorded three of his team's seven shots on goal.

Coffey played all 110 minutes in the match and recorded six saves and allowed one goal to move to 0-0-1 on the year, while William Birka-White had two saves and allowed one goal to move to 0-1-1 on the season.

The match featured 24 fouls, nine corner kicks and two yellow cards by the Lynx.

Webster will look to rebound on Sunday, Sept. 8 as they travel to Conway, Ark., for a 1 p.m. non-conference match against Hendrix College. Last season, the Gorloks picked up a 4-0 win over the Warriors in Memphis, Tenn., on Sept. 16, 2018.
