Men's Soccer Outshoots Hendrix 26-3 in Road Setback to Warriors

CONWAY, Ark. - Webster University Men's Soccer held a 26-3 advantage in shots here Sunday afternoon, but Hendrix College was able to overcome that disadvantage by scoring a goal in the 12th minute en route to earning a 1-0 victory over the Gorloks at Warrior Field.

With the setback, Webster falls to 1-1-1 overall on the year, while Hendrix improves to 1-3 on the season.

Sunday's match was the first road contest of the season for the Gorloks as they opened the 2019 campaign with home matches against Rhodes College on Friday and against Minnesota-Morris on Labor Day.

The 26 shots were the second most of the season for Webster as the Gorloks recorded 35 shots in its season opener against Minnesota-Morris.

Hendrix scored the match's lone goal in the 12th minute as Josh Robbins connected on a penalty kick. The penalty kick was the first shot of the game for the Warriors, who were outshot, 9-2 in the opening half.

Following Robbins' goal, sophomore midfielder Isaac Pearson (St. Louis, Mo./Maplewood) put two shots on goal within three minutes of each other, but both shots were saved by Warriors goalkeeper Josh Neuman.

In the 29th minute, Robbins had his second shot of the match go high to keep the score at 1-0.

Junior goalkeeper Matt Amick (St. Louis, Mo./Lindbergh) would save Hendrix's third shot of the game just 63 seconds into the second half. That would be Hendrix's final shot of the match.

At the 77th minute, junior forward Ben Aziz (Paris, France/Marquette) had his shot on goal save by Neuman. Aziz had another scoring chance about two minutes later, but his shot was blocked.

In the 81st minute, the Gorloks had back-to-back shots from junior midfielder Hunter Olaso (Kailua-Kona, Hawaii/Kealakehe) and freshman forward Colby Kapp (Quincy, Ill./Quincy Notre Dame) blocked and sail wide respectively.

Olaso put anther shot on goal late in the 88th minute, but that shot was save by Neuman and with 29 seconds left in the match, senior defender Justin Schmidt (St. Louis, Mo./Metro) had his shot that would've tied the match saved to seal Hendrix's victory.

Leading the way offensively for the Gorloks was sophomore forward Aamahn Murvin (Sahuarita, Ariz./Walden Grove), who took seven of WU's 26 shots. In addition to Murvin, Olaso and Aziz each had four shots and Schmidt added three shots in the loss. The seven shots by Murvin tied a career high.

Amick (1-1-0) played nearly 88 minutes in goal and allowed just one goal and recorded one save.

Robbins paced Hendrix with two of his team's three shots.

Neuman (1-3-0) recorded five saves in goal for the Warriors.

Webster also held a 12-2 edge in corner kicks and both teams committed nine fouls in the match.

Webster will return to action on Wednesday, Sept. 11 as the Gorloks travel to Jacksonville, Ill., for a 7 p.m. non-conference match at Illinois College. Last season, Webster picked up a 1-0 home win over Illinois College at World Wide Technology Soccer Park.
