Women's Basketball Scores Season High 108 Points in Home Win Over Iowa Wesleyan

WEBSTER GROVES - Webster University Women's Basketball set two new season highs here Wednesday evening as the Gorloks scored a season high 108 points and made a season high and school record tying 50 field goals en route to posting an impressive 108-74 victory over Iowa Wesleyan in St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action at Grant Gymnasium.

Wednesday's 108 point scoring outburst bettered the old season high of 90 points set last Saturday at Eureka and was just four points shy of the single game school record of 112 points set in 2000 against Stephens College, while the 50 made field goals, which are the most recorded by a Division III team in a game this season, are the most in game since also making 50 field goals in that same game against Stephens on Nov. 29, 2000. In addition, Webster fell one assist shy of the school's single game mark of 38 as they finished with 37 on Wednesday. The school record of 38 assists was set against Principia in 2004.

With Wednesday's victory, Webster extends its win streak to six consecutive games and improves its overall record to 10-6 and completes the first half of its league schedule with an 8-1 record.

The Gorloks, who have now topped the century mark eight times in school history and the first time since scoring 106 points against MacMurray in 2017, hit the century mark on a lay-up from sophomore forward Courtney Ragland (New Athens, Ill./New Athens) with 5:16 left in the game. Ragland's lay-up gave the Gorloks a 101-63 lead.

In Wednesday's win, the Gorloks had six players score in double figures for the first time since having six double-digit scorers against Principia on Feb. 24, 2004. Senior guard Jaysea Morgan (Fisk, Mo./Twin Rivers) led the way with a team high 17 points, while sophomore forward Addison Beussink (Jackson, Mo./Saxony Lutheran) added 16 points and eight boards and freshman forward Julie Baudendistel (St. Louis, Mo./Lindbergh) had 14 points. Ragland tallied a career high 12 points in 13 minutes, while junior guard Kiara Rhines (Glendale, Ariz./Ironwood) chipped in with 11 points and junior forward Darieana Hunter (Norman, Okla./Norman) scored 10 points in the win.

For the game, nine Gorloks scored seven or more points and 11 of the 14 players that saw action scored at least two points on the night.

After watching Iowa Wesleyan scored nine of the first 15 points in the game to take a 9-6 lead, the Gorloks used a 16-0 run over the next six-plus minutes to take a 22-9 lead. The run was keyed by a combined 10 points from Baudendistel and Beussink.

The Tigers (2-14, 2-7 SLIAC), though, halted WU's run with a three-pointer from Sydney Farrar with 1:54 left in the opening period. That would be as close IWU would get the opening period as the Gorloks closed the period on a 10-0 run to take a 32-12 lead after the first 10 minutes of the contest. Morgan, who scored eight of her 17 points in the period, pushed her career scoring total to 876 points, which is ninth on the school's career chart as she passed Taylor Lucas (861 points), Courtney Pursley (869 points) and Cassie Endicott (873) with her offensive performance on Wednesday.

In the second period, the teams combined to shoot 67 percent from the field as Webster shot 64 percent from the field and scored 34 points, while IWU shot 73 percent from the field and tallied 24 points to give Webster a 66-36 lead at the half. The 66 first half points were a season high.

IWU, who has now lost three straight games overall this season and seven consecutive game against the Gorloks, opened the third period on a 12-8 run to cut Webster's lead to 74-48. From that point, the Gorloks answered with a 12-4 run to push its lead to 86-52 following a basket by sophomore forward Taylor Zarr (St. Louis, Mo./Oakville) with two minutes left in the period. The Tigers would score four of the final six points of the period to give the Gorloks an 88-66 lead heading to the final period.

In the fourth period, the two teams traded points to open the period, before the Gorloks used a 16-9 run to turn a 90-58 lead into a 10-6-67 advantage with 3:35 remaining in the game. The run, which was keyed by a combined 11 points from Rhines and Ragland, began with a lay-up from Rhines and was capped by a basket from Ragland. Rhines and Ragland combined to score 15 of Webster's 20 points in the period as Rhines tallied nine points and Ragland had six points.

The Tigers would cap the scoring by tallying seven of the final nine points to set the final deficit.

Allie Massner paed Iowa Wesleyan with 20 points, while Farrar added 14 points and Maddie Williamson chipped in with 13 points and six steals. Morgan McCrea was the fourth Tiger to score in double digits as she tallied 10 points, but committed nine turnovers.

Webster scored 20 or more points in all four periods for the first time this season, including tallying 30-plus points in the opening two periods. The Gorloks have now scored 20 or more points in 16 of its last 20 periods.

For the game, Webster shot 60.2 percent from the field, 50 percent from the 3-point line and went 5-for-6 (83.3 percent) from the free throw line. The 60.2 field goal percentage is fifth on the school's single game charts.

The Gorloks finished the game with a 35-24 edge on the glass, including recording 22 offensive boards and forced IWU into 33 turnovers that led to 50 points. Webster also had 20 steals in the win.

Sophomore guard Hannah Cottrell (Steelville, Mo./Steelville) and freshman guard Tiffany Sakamoto (St. Louis, Mo./St. Joseph Academy) each dished out six assists, while Zarr added four assists and three other Gorloks recorded three assists each on the night. The 37 assists are the most recorded by a Division III team in a game this season.

The Tigers shot 51 percent from the field and 33 percent from the 3-point line and also were also 16-for-16 from the free throw line in the loss.

Webster will look to make its seven straight wins as they open the second half of its SLIAC slate with a 12 p.m EST game in Louisville, Ky., against Spalding University (8-8 overall, 6-3 SLIAC). Spalding picked up an 89-82 win in overtime over the Gorloks in Grant Gym on Dec. 5 to open SLIAC play.
