JACKSONVILLE, Ill. - Three days after scoring a season high 125 points in its 125-121 home win over Greenville, Webster University Men's Basketball bettered that mark by one point here Saturday afternoon as the Gorloks scored 126 points in earning an impressive 126-78 victory over MacMurray College in St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action at Bill Wall Gymnasium.
The 126 points were the most points scored in a game by the Gorloks since tallying 128 points last season at home against Greenville. Since beginning intercollegiate men's basketball in 1984, Webster has topped the century mark 13 times in school history, with nine of those 13 games coming against Greenville and two of those games coming against MacMurray as Webster also scored 110 points against MacMurray in 2005.Â
With Saturday's victory, Webster improves its record to 11-8 overall and 10-2 in the SLIAC, while MacMurray falls to 6-13 overall and 4-8 in the SLIAC. The win was also Webster's fourth straight and eighth in its last nine games.Â
Saturday's win was keyed by Webster's strong shooting as the Gorloks shot a season high 68 percent from the field and also shot a season and school record high 82.4 percent from the 3-point line as the Gorloks were 14-for-17 from downtown in the game. Webster went 6-for-7 from long distance in the first half and 8-for-10 from downtown after halftime.
The 82.4 percent shooting from the 3-point line was a school record as it bettered the old record of 75 percent (12-for-16) shooting from downtown against Rust College on Nov. 26, 2016, while the 68 percent field goal percentage was the second highest mark in a game in school history. In addition, the 82.4 percent from the 3-point line is also the highest in a Division III men's basketball game this season.
Webster's 53 made field goals are also third most in a game in school history and the second most in a game this season as the Gorloks made 54 field goals in Wednesday's win over Greenville. Over its last two games, Webster has made 107 field goals and is shooting 66 percent from the floor and 79 percent from the 3-point line.Â
Six Gorloks scored in double figures in Saturday's win as senior guard
Josh Johnson (St. Louis, Mo./Clayton) led the way with a game high 25 points, including going 5-for-5 from the 3-point line. In addition to Johnson, junior forward
Rodson Etienne (West Palm Beach, Fla./Royal Palm Beach) tallied 19 points, all of which came in the first half, while senior guard
Jordan Clay (St. Louis, Mo./Blackburn College) added 17 points and seven rebounds.
The other double-digit scorers were freshman guard
Wynne Brown, Jr. (Memphis, Tenn./Bartlett) had 13 points, including a 3-for-4 effort from the 3-point line, while senior guard
Aron Hopp (Lincoln, Ill./Lincoln College) and freshman guard
Nick Wagner (St. Louis, Mo./Lutheran South) each had 10 points as they went a combined 4-for-4 from long distance.Â
All 16 Gorloks that suited up played in Saturday's win and 14 of those 16 players scored at least two points and 11 of those 16 recorded at least one rebound.
Saturday's game was over in the opening nine minutes as the Gorloks, who scored the first nine points of the contest, led 37-7 following a lay-up by Hopp with 10:39 left in the opening half. Webster would eventually lead by as much as 39 points in the first half at 65-29 following a lay-up by Clay with 1:08 remaining in the half. MacMurray would score five of the final seven points of the half to cut Webster's lead to 67-31 at the half. The 67 points were the most scored in the first half this season by the Gorloks and 36 point lead was WU's largest halftime lead this year.Â
In the first half, Etienne, Brown, Jr., Johnson and Clay combined for 59 of the Gorloks 67 points as Etienne had 19 points, while Johnson had 14 points and Clay and Brown, Jr., each had 13 points.Â
The Gorloks opened the second half on a 17-8 run to push its 36 point halftime lead to 84-39 following a 3-pointer by Johnson with 15:26 left in the game. MacMurray, though, would respond with an 11-4 run capped by a trey from David Catanus to drop WU's lead to 88-50 with 12:56 remaining.Â
That would be as close as the Highlanders would get as the Gorloks responded with a 17-4 run that began with a basket from Hopp and was capped by a trey from junior guard
Elijah Macias (San Antonio, Texas/Medina Valley). Perhaps the play of the game came during that run as senior guard
Blake Ferrell (Ballwin, Mo./Parkway South) threw down a dunk on a fast break to give WU a 98-52 lead.
Webster would hit the century mark for the second straight game on a basket by Macias with 9:47 remaining in the game. The Gorloks lead would balloon to as much as  53 points following trey from Wagner with 2:03 left in the game. Wagner's triple gave the Gorloks a 123-70 lead.Â
MacMurray was paced by a 17 point game off the bench from David Catanus, while Cameron Jamison had 14 points in the loss. The Gorloks held Logan Dorethy to just eight points. Dorethy, who had 34 points and 12 rebounds in its earlier game this season against Webster, entered the game averaging 21.2 points per game on the season.Â
While Webster shot 68 percent from the field and a school record 82.4 percent from the 3-point line, MacMurray finished the game shooting 47 percent from the field and 43 percent from the 3-point line. The Highlanders shot 56 percent from the field and 50 percent from long distance in the second half.Â
The Gorloks held a 41-22 edge on the glass as senior forward
Enrique Tankins (Wentzville, Mo./Timberland) pulled down a game hight eight boards, while Clay added seven and freshman forward
Javane Nugent (Sunrise, Fla./Piper) had five boards.
Webster forced MacMurray into 19 turnovers that led 28 points and the Gorloks had 23 assists, including four assists from Ferrell.Â
The Gorloks committed just 12 turnovers and held a 70-42 edge in points in the paint and a 15-2 edge in second chance points thanks to 10 offensive rebounds.
Webster will look to make it five straight wins as the Gorloks travel up Big Bend Blvd. for its second meeting this season with Fontbonne University on Wednesday, Feb. 5 at 7:30 p.m. Fontbonne, who fell 155-149 in overtime on Saturday at Greenville, comes into Wednesday's game with a 10-9 overall record and is tied for second in the league with Greenville with an 8-4 record.Â
