MOUNT PLEASANT, Iowa - Webster University Men's Basketball closed out the 2019-20 regular season here Saturday afternoon by putting six players in double figures en route to earning an 87-77 victory over Iowa Wesleyan in St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action at Ruble Arena.
With Saturday's win, the Gorloks complete the regular season with a 17-8 overall record and a 16-2 mark in the league and also extended its win streak to a season high 10 consecutive games. In fact, since suffering a 98-97 loss to Greenville on Dec. 7 that dropped its overall record to 2-7 on the year, Webster closed the regular season by winning 15 of its last final 16 games with the only setback coming at Eureka (85-79) on Jan. 18.Â
Along with capping the regular season by winning 10 consecutive games, the Gorloks also won 16 league games and became just the second team since the league went to an 18 game schedule in 2013-14 to record 16 wins in league action as the Gorloks join Spalding, who went 16-2 in SLISC play in 2013-14. In fact, since the beginning of the 2018-19 season, Webster has posted 31-5 record in SLIAC play.Â
Saturday's win also featured a career milestone for senior forward
Enrique Tankins (Wentzville, Mo./Timberland) as he became the 13th Gorlok in school history to score 1,000 career points as Tankins tallied 14 points in the win over the Tigers. Tankins entered Saturday's game needing just 11 points to join the 1,000 Point Club and he reached that milestone on two free throws with 5:46 left in the game.Â
With his 1,000 career points, he becomes the second Gorlok this season to join the 1,000 Point Club as senior guard
Josh Johnson (St. Louis, Mo./Clayton) joined the club earlier this season. In additon, he is the eighth player to score 1,000 career points during
Chris Bunch's 18-year tenure as Webster's coach.
In addition to Tankins' 14 points, freshman guard
Wynne Brown, Jr. (Memphis, Tenn./Bartlett) led the way with a game high 21 points, including connecting on 5-of-6 3-pointers, while Johnson also had 14 points. Junior forward
Rodson Etienne (West Palm Beach, Fla./Royal Palm Beach) and senior guard
Blake Ferrell (Ballwin, Mo./Parkway South) each had 11 points and senior guard
Jordan Clay (St. Louis, Mo./Blackburn College) tallied 10 points.Â
Along with the 14 points, Tankins also finished with 13 rebounds for his 12th double-double of the season and he also had seven assists, while Ferrell finished with nine rebounds to miss his first career double-double by one board.Â
Saturday's game was a lot like the first meeting this season between the teams as Webster won that game, 80-75. In that earlier game, Webster led by 16 points with a little more than seven minutes left in the game, but IWU would score 14 of the next 16 points to cut Webster's lead to 73-69. Â
On Saturday, the Gorloks led 80-60 following a free throw by Tankins with 8:03 left in the game, before the Tigers used a 12-5 run over a span of nearly seven minutes to pull within 13 at 85-72. Following a basket by freshman guard
Nick Wagner (St. Louis, Mo./Lutheran North) gave Webster an 87-72 lead, IWU would score the final five points of the contest to cut the final margin to 10 points.Â
IWU jumped out to a 12-8 lead in the first half and led 18-16 when the Gorloks used a 13-3 run to take a 29-21 lead with 7:31 left in the opening half. The Tigers, though, responded with a 14-5 run to retake the lead at 35-34.Â
Webster would close the half on a 10-4 run to take its 44-39 lead at the half.Â
In the half, Johnson, Etienne and Brown, Jr., combined for 31 points of Webster's 44 points.Â
The Gorloks would come out of the gate to open the second half by scoring 16 of the first 22 points to push its lead to 60-45 following a lay-up by Clay with 15:28 left in the game.Â
After that run, the Tigers would score four straight points to pull within 60-49, but Webster responded with a 20-11 run to push out to 80-60 lead lead with 8:03Â remaining.Â
Austin Banks paced IWU with 20 points, while Jarryd Fernandes added 18 points and five boards off the bench and Jake Neubauer chipped in with 16 points in the loss.Â
For the game, Webster shot 47 percent from field and 41 percent from the 3-point line, while IWU shot 45 percent from the floor and 36 percent from the 3-point line.Â
The Gorloks held a 46-26 edge on the glass and dished out 18 assists on 31 made baskets.
IWU won the turnover battle, 14-10 and blocked seven shots in the loss.Â
The Gorloks will now turn its attention to the postseason as they will host the SLIAC Tournament next weekend at Grant Gymnasium. The top-seeded Gorloks will open the tournament on Thursday, Feb. 27 with a 7:30 p.m. semifinal match-up against fourth-seeded Blackburn (13-12 overall, 12-6 SLIAC), while No. 2 seeded Greenville (13-12 overall, 12-6 SLIAC) faces No. 3 seeded Fontbonne (14-11 overall, 12-6 SLIAC) in the other semifinal at 5:30 p.m. The championship game is schedueld for Saturday, Feb. 29 at 3 p.m. The champion of the SLIAC Tournament earns the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.Â
