BELLEVILLE, Ill. - Webster University Women's Tennis won their spring opener 5-4 here Saturday over Hendrix College at St. Clair Tennis Center on a win at No. 6 singles from sophomore Emma Ferguson (Troy, Mo./Troy Buchanan).
With the win, Webster improves to 3-3 on the 2019-20 season, while Hendrix falls to 3-4.Â
Saturday's match marked the debut of Webster's new coach, John Black, who began his tenure with the Gorloks in late January after spending the past 18 years at Grand Valley State University.Â
In Saturday's match, Webster swept all three doubles matches as freshman Elizabeth Hill (Allegan, Mich./Allegan) and sophomore Navone Armstrong (St. Louis, Mo./McCluer North) picked up the first point of the match at the spot with an 8-1 win over Hendrix's tandem of Sarah Morris and Kashti Shah.
Junior Alyssa Tourville (Belleville, Ill./Kaskaskia College) and Ferguson paired up to play at the No. 2 spot and they collected an 8-3 win on Saturday, while Webster's No. 1 team of freshman Erin Brezovar (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) and junior Maggie Federhofer (St. Louis, Mo./Lutheran South) also won by an 8-3 score over Hendrix's tandem of Rebecca Sherman and Shelby Worsham.Â
In singles play, Tourville gave Webster a 4-0 lead in the match as she picked up a 6-4, 6-2 at the No. 4 spot over Sara Hoopchuk.
Hendrix picked up two wins at the No. 5 and No. 1 spots as Armstrong battled in three sets, but fell 6-2, 2-6, 10-6 in a third set tiebreaker to Morris, while freshman Katarina Serbentas (Iron River, Mich./West Iron County) fell in straight sets (6-0, 6-2) to Becky Sherman.Â
The Warriors other two wins in Saturday's match came at the No. 2 and No. 3 spots Worsham defeated Brezovar at No. 2 singles (6-4, 6-3) and Greer Ayers won at No. 3 over Federhofer (6-1, 6-3).Â
Those wins by Hendrix set up the ultimate match at No. 6 singles between Ferguson and Shah. At the No. 6 spot, Ferguson won by identical 6-0, 6-0 scores to seal Webster's win.Â
Webster will return to action next Saturday, Feb. 29 as they travel to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, to play matches against Coe College and Central (Iowa) College at 9 a.m. and 12 p.m. respectively.
