Men's Basketball Runs Past Principia, Extends Home SLIAC Win Streak to 20 Straight Games

WEBSTER GROVES - Webster University Men's Baseball continued its strong play at home in St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action on Saturday afternoon as the Gorloks scored over 40 points in both periods ien route to posting an 83-72 win over Principia College at Grant Gymnasium.

With the win, Webster extends its home win streak in SLIAC play to 20 consecutive games and moves its record to 13-8 overall and remains two games up in the league standings with a 12-2 record. The Gorloks haven't lost at home in SLIAC play since suffering a 78-61 loss to Westminster on Jan. 20, 2018. Principia fell to 3-17 overall and 2-12 in the SLIAC.

Along with winning its 20th consecutive home game in SLIAC play, Saturday's victory also extended Webster overall win streak to six consecutive games since suffering an 85-79 loss at Eureka on Jan. 18. 

In Saturday's win, Webster had two players score 20 or more points and five players overall finished in double figures as senior guard Josh Johnson (St. Louis, Mo./Clayton) and senior guard Jordan Clay (St. Louis, Mo./Blackburn College) each tallied 21 points against the Panthers. With his 21 points, Johnson pushed his career scoring total to 1,121 points, which is 11th on the school's all-time chart as he passed Brady Barke, who scored 1,115 points as a Gorlok from 2000-04. 

Along with Johnson and Clay, junior forward Rodson Etienne (West Palm Beach. Fla./Royal Palm Beach) added 16 points, while senior forward Enrique Tankins (Wentzville, Mo./Timberland) added his 20th career double-double with 13 points and 15 rebounds and freshman guard Wynne Brown, Jr. (Memphis, Tenn./Bartlett) had 12 points. 

The 15 rebounds pushed Tankins within one rebound of tying Paul Berra for third on the school's all-time rebound chart as Berra had 589 rebounds from 1986-90 and the 13 points pushed Tankins within 70 points of joining the school's 1,000 Point Club. 

In fact, all 83 of Webster's points in Saturday's game were scored by its starters as its bench failed to score a point for the first time since the final game of the 2015-16 season against Iowa Wesleyan, a span of 98 games. 

Principia scored four of the first six points in Saturday's game, before Webster used a 23-7 run to push out to a 25-11 lead just seven minutes into the game. The Panthers, though, would score nine of the next 13 points to drop Webster's lead to 29-20, but the Gorloks used seven straight points from Johnson to push out to a 35-20 lead with 6:15 left in the opening period. 

The Panthers would outscore Webster, 7-6, over the final five-plus minutes of the first half to give the Gorloks a 41-27 lead at the half. 

Webster would open the second half on a 17-10 run to turn its 41-27 halftime lead into a 58-37 lead just a little under six minutes into the half. The run was keyed by six points from Clay, while Etienne and Tankins each had four points. 

Principia, though, would respond with a 20-4 run over a span of five-plus minutes to cut Webster's lead to 62-57 with 8:04 left in the game. In fact, Principia ended the run by scoring seven consecutive points, including Trevaughn Goodman capping the run by a fast break basket. 

That would be as close as the Panthers would get as Webster used a 14-4 run capped by a back-to-back baskets from Tankins and Brown, Jr., to push its lead to 76-61 with 3:01 remaining. 

The Gorloks would seal the win by hitting seven of eight free throws over the final 63 seconds to hold off the Panthers and seal the victory. 

Goodman paced Principia with 22 points and 11 rebounds, while Clark Davidson added 16 points and Payton Sellers chipped with 14 points and eight rebounds. 

The Gorloks finished the game shooting 48 percent from the field and 38 percent from the 3-point line, while Principia shot 44 percent from the floor and 25 percent (6-for-24) from long distance. 

Webster held a 38-35 edge on the boards and both teams finished with 14 turnovers each for the game. The Gorloks also had 17 assists, including a season high six assists. 

In addition to holding an edge on the boards, Webster also blocked seven shots, including a career high five blocks from Tankins. 

Both teams were strong at the free throw line on Saturday was Webster was 15-for-18 (83 percent) at the line, including Johnson going 8-for-8 from the line in the win, while Principia was 8-for-10 (80 percent) at the free throw line. 

Webster will look to make it seven straight wins this coming Wednesday, Feb. 12 as the Gorloks travel to Fulton, Mo., for a 7:30 p.m. game at Westminster (Mo.) College (8-12 overall, 7-7 SLIAC). The Gorloks earned a 78-65 win at home over the Blue Jays on Jan. 11 in the first meeting this season.
