ELSAH, Ill. - Webster University Men's Tennis continued its spring season here Saturday as the Gorloks dropped a hard-fought 5-4 setback to Simpson College on the Principia College campus.
With Saturday's loss, Webster falls to 2-1 on the season, while Simpson improves to 3-7.
In Saturday's match, the top of Webster's line-up was strong as all four of their wins came at the top two spots in both their singles and doubles line-up.
The Gorloks opened the match by taking a 2-1 lead after winning at both No. 1 and No. 2 doubles as senior
Riley Muren (O'Fallon, Mo./UIS) and sophomore
Tanner Haugen (Jefferson City, Mo./Jefferson City) picked up an 8-4 win at No. 1 doubles and junior
Austin Nation (Oklahoma City, Okla./Purcell) and freshman
Justin Weaver (Fenton, Mo./Rockwood Summit) won 8-6 at the No. 2 doubles spot.
Simpson, though, would prevent a sweep by the Gorloks as their No. 3 tandem of Aaron Price and Caleb Vasconez defeated Webster's tandem of senior
Nicolas Andrade (Quito, Ecuador/Francis Howell) and sophomore
Harsh Jaswal (O'Fallon, Mo./Fort Zumwalt West), 8-2.
Leading 2-1 in the match, Webster just needed to win three of the six singles matches, but they won just two of those matches as Simpson rallied to win the match.
In singles action, Muren continued his hot play early in the spring season as he picked up a 6-2, 6-1 win at the No. 1 spot over Simpson's Reade Reiter.
Meanwhile, Nation picked up a win at the No. 2 singles spot as he defeated Simpson's Brett Dewerff in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4.
With Webster leading 4-1 in the match, Simpson would win at No. 3, No. 4 and No. 6 singles to tie the match and force Haugen to play another deciding match at the No. 5 spot, but Haugen fell shot to Ethan Humble (6-1, 6-2) to seal Simpson's match win.
The Gorloks will return to action on Tuesday, March 3 as they return to Elsah, Ill., to face Illinois Wesleyan College for a 7 p.m. match.
