HILTON HEAD, S.C. - Webster University Women's Tennis extended its win streak to three consecutive victories here Wednesday as the Gorloks picked up a 6-3 win over Gettysburg College at the Chaplin Park Tennis Center.
With the win, Webster moves its record to 6-5 overall on the season, while Gettysburg falls to 1-4 on the year.
"We got outstanding play in doubles that led to a 3-0 lead in the match after the doubles sweep and we were able to get a split in singles with our strength in the middle getting those wins," Webster head coach
John Black said.
In Wednesday's match, the Gorloks swept all three doubles matches in three straight matches and five times on the year.
Perhaps the doubles match of the day came at the No. 1 spot as junior
Maggie Federhofer (St. Louis, Mo./Lutheran North) and freshman
Erin Brezovar (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) made an adjustment in their games as they trailed 5-2, but rallied to earn the tiebreaker win, 7-3, to win the match, 8-7. Federhofer and Brezovar won their sixth straight match and improved their record to 8-3 on the year.
At No. 2 doubles, the Gorloks won 8-2, while at the No. 3 spot, sophomore Navonne Armstrong (St. Louis, Mo./McCluer North) and freshman
Elizabeth Hill (Allegan, Mich./Allegan) won 8-6 to complete the doubles sweep.
Meanwhile, in singles, the two teams split their six matches as Gettysburg won at the No. 1, No. 2 and No. 6 spots, but Webster won the middle three matches (No. 3, No. 4 and No. 5) to earn the match win.
At No. 1 singles, Brezovar suffered a 6-2, 7-5 loss to Samantha Boardman, while Federhofer fell 6-0, 6-3 at the No. 2 spot to Alex Rieg and junior
Liz Gerger (St. Louis, Mo./Francis Howell Central) fell 6-1, 4-1 at the No. 6 spot.
Webster's wins in singles all came in straight sets as junior
Alyssa Tourville (Belleville, Ill./Kaskaskia College) won at the No. 3 spot over Shaye Barnes, 6-2, 6-4, while Armstrong won at the No. 4 spot over Alexis Rinker (6-3, 6-0) and sophomore
Emma Ferguson (Troy, Mo./Troy Buchanan) defeated Katie Delia, 6-4, 6-2 at the No. 5 spot.
The Gorloks will wrap up play in the Spring TennisFest on Thursday, March 12 as they face Sweet Briar College in a 9:00 a.m. ET match at the Evian Tennis Center.
