HILTON HEAD, S.C. - Webster University Women's Tennis closed out play here Thursday in the 2020 Spring TennisFest by dropping a hard-fought 7-2 decision to Sweet Briar College at the Evian Tennis Center.
With Thursday's setback, Webster snapped its three game win streak and drops its record to 6-6 on the year, including posting a 3-1 record of the Spring TennisFest. Sweet Briar improved to 4-2 on the year.
"We played strong doubles and singles on Thursday, but dropped a hard-fought match to Sweet Briar," Webster head tennis coach
John Black said. "Overall, it was a great trip. Our team, already close, is now very tight and playing great tennis and look forward to returning home and continuing its season."
In doubles action, Sweet Briar won two of the three doubles matches, but Webster would prevent a sweep of the doubles point by the Vixens as sophomore
Navone Armstrong (St. Louis, Mo./McCluer North) and freshman
Elizabeth Hill (Allegan, Mich./Allegan) earned an 8-3 win at the No. 3 doubles spot.
Sweet Briar won the other two matches matches - 8-3 at No. 1 and 8-0 at No. 2.
Holding a 2-1 lead in the match, Sweet Briar would open singles play by picking up wins at both the No. 2 and No. 4 spots to take a 4-1 lead in the match.
The Gorloks, though, would score its only win in singles at the No. 6 spot as sophomore
Emma Ferguson (Troy, Mo./Troy Buchanan) picked up a 6-2, 6-0 win over Ruth Lechner. The win by Ferguson improved her record to 6-4 on the season and she went 3-0 during the trip to Hilton Head.
Sweet Briar would then seal the match win with its win at No. 1 singles as Ruth de Souza defeated freshman
Erin Brezovar (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) in straight sets, 7-5, 6-2.
The Vixens pushed its lead to 6-2 after picking up a 6-1, 6-0 win at the No. 2 spot over Webster freshman
Katarina Serbentas (Iron River, Mich./West Iron County).
Sweet Briar would then win the final singles match at the No. 5 spot, which was perhaps the match of the day, as Armstrong faced Lacey Tucker. At the No. 5 spot, Armstrong won 7-6 (7-4) in the first set, before Tucker won 6-2 in the second set and in the third set tiebreaker, Tucker would win 10-7.
Webster will now return home to St. Louis, Mo., and play host to St. Louis Pharmacy on Friday, March 20 on 6 p.m. at the Webster Groves Tennis Center.
