Men's Tennis Posts Win Over Penn State-Behrend to Close Spring TennisFest

HILTON HEAD, S.C. - Webster University Men's Tennis team closed out its Spring Break trip to the 2020 Spring TennisFest by posting a 5-4 win over Penn State-Behrend here Thursday at Hilton Head Resort. 

With Thursday's win, Webster went 3-1 in the Spring TennisFest and improved its overall record to 6-3 on the season. PSUB fell to 8-6 on the year. 

"Today, the top of the line-up rose to the occasion in both singles and doubles to claim the match victory," said Webster head tennis coach John Black.

In doubles action, the Gorloks won two of the three matches to take a 2-1 lead in the match heading to singles. 

One of the two wins in doubles came at the No. 1 spot as senior Riley Muren (O'Fallon, Ill./Illinois-Springfield) and junior Austin Nation (Oklahoma City, Okla./Purcell) posted an 8-0 win over PSUB's tandem of Michael Duckett and Noah Colvin, The win improved Muran and Nation to 3-1 on the season as all four the matches were played during the Spring TennisFest. 

In No. 2 doubles, sophomore Tanner Haugen (Jefferson City, Mo./Jefferson City) and freshman Justin Weaver (Fenton, Mo./Rockwood Summit) picked up a hard-fought 8-6 win over PSUB's Mason Harbaugh and Jimmy Lobdell. 

PSUB picked up a point in doubles at the No. 3 spot. 

In singles, the top three spots in the line-up won their matches to give the Gorloks to match win.

Muren would get one of those wins as he improved to 10-2 on the season and 9-0 in dual action at the No. 1 spot as he defeated Duckett, 6-1, 6-1. 

Weaver would get a win at No. 3 singles as he defeated Harbaugh, 6-2, 6-4.

But perhaps the match of the day was at the No. 2 singles spot a Nation posted a hard-fought win over Colvin in a see-saw battle, 6-2, 6-4. 

"Austin really played tough as nails to close out his match at No. 2 singles," Black said. 

Penn State-Behrend would pick up its wins at No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 singles to complete the match. 

The Gorloks, who have won four its last five matches with the lone loss being an 8-1 decision to FDU-Florham on March 9, will now return to action on Wednesday, March 18 as they open St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play at the Webster Groves Tennis Complex against Fontbonne University beginning at 6 p.m.
