AUBURNDALE, Fla. - Webster University closed out its seven-game Spring Break trip to Florida here Sunday as the Gorloks posted a 3-1 win over Keene State College at the Lake Myrtle Sports Complex to complete play in the 2020 RussMatt Central Florida Invitational.
With the win, the No. 2 ranked Gorloks improve to 8-5 on the season and completed its Florida trip with a 5-2 record, while Keene State falls to 1-8 on the season.
Sunday's game could have be the final game of the 2020 baseball season for the Gorloks as the NCAA has already canceled all of its postseason championship events for both the winter and spring seasons and most of Webster's upcoming opponents have put a pause on their season due to the fallout from the rapid spread nationwide of the COVID-19 Coronavirus. As of now, Webster University has not yet cancelled any of its spring sports seasons, but the situation is constantly being monitored and could change rapidly in the next few days.
As for Sunday's game, the Gorloks offense was able to produce six hits, but got outstanding pitcher from junior hurler
Sean Beaver (San Diego, Calif./Scripps Ranch) and three relievers as they held the Owls to just seven hits, but one run and recorded a total of 10 strikeouts, including a season high tying eight from Beaver, who lowered his season ERA from 0.57 to 0.44 with his five inning performance on Sunday.
Beaver, who got only one run of support in Sunday's outing, left after five innings as he allowed just two hits and no runs, while walking just one and striking out eight. Beaver is 1-2 on the season and in 20.2 innings of work, he has allowed one earned run, while walking five and striking out 20.
Sophomore
Andrew Padilla (Burbank, Ill./Reavis), who was the first of three relievers, pitched the next two innings to earn the win as he allowed two hits and a run, while striking out one and walking none.
The next Gorlok out of the bullpen was sophomore
Alex Foppe (St. Louis, Mo./St. Mary's) as he pitched a scoreless eighth inning as he worked around two singles, but did not allow a run.
Webster's third reliever, junior
Jake Anderson (Bolingbrook, Ill./Bolingbrook) would allow a one out single in the ninth, but would retire the next two Owls on a strike out and a ground out to end the game and seal his first save of the season.
The Gorloks got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first as senior leftfielder
Garrett Davis (Geneva, Ill./Elgin CC) recorded his first double of the season and after stealing third for his first career stolen base, Davis would score on an error on a ball hit by Gorlok senior catcher
Joe Swanson (Park Ridge, Ill./Maine West).
From that point, Webster put the game on the shoulders of Beaver as he would put zeros over the next four innings as he allowed just three baserunners over the final four innings of his outing.
Keene State would tie the game in the top of the sixth as Tom Meucci doubled with one out and scored on an RBI single by Connor Walsh off of Padilla.
In the bottom of the sixth, senior centerfielder
Aron Hopp (Lincoln, Ill./Lincoln College) walked to lead off the inning, stole second with one out and moved to third on a ground out, but would be stranded at third when senior designated hitter
A.J. Smith (DuQuoin, Ill./DuQuoin) grounded out to end the inning.
Padilla would retire the Owls in order in the seventh and then in the bottom of the seventh, the Gorloks used three hits and a KSC error to plate two runs and take a 3-1 lead in the game. In the inning, senior All-American first baseman
Kyler Kent (Pottsboro, Texas/Pottsboro) led off with a single down the right field line, moved to second on a bunt single from junior shortstop
Matt Staker (El Cajon, Calif./Saint Augustine) and after both runners advanced a base on a groundout by freshman second baseman
Mitch Daniels (Columbia, Ill./Columbia), junior rightfielder
Adam Lovell (Lafayette, Ind./Saint Joseph's College) reached on a bunt single that scored Kent and on the play, KSC pitcher Brian Viera would commit an error on an overthrow of first base that allowed Staker to score from second.
In the eighth, Keene State put runners on thanks to two singles, but Foppe would prevent either runner from scoring to keep the score 3-1 in Webster's favor.
Davis and Lovell led Webster's offense on Sunday with two hits apiece, while junior All-American third baseman
Ben Swords (Freeport, Ill./Freeport) had his six game hitting streak snapped as he was 0-for-3 in the game and also had his reached base streak snapped at nine consecutive games.
Viera (0-2) took the loss for the Owls as he allowed three hits and two runs (one earned) in three innings of relief and also walked two and struck out one.
Meucci and Tyler Gammie each had two hits for the Owls.
Webster also stole five bases in Sunday's game and are now 47-for-54 on stolen bases this season, including Lovell being 14-for-17 on steals.
The Gorloks were scheduled to open St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play next weekend in Eureka, Ill., against Eureka College, but that three game series has been canceled by Eureka and a make-up date, if there will one, has yet to be determined.
