Men's Tennis Picks Up 8-1 Win at Illinois College

JACKSONVILLE, Ill. - Webster University opened the 2020 men's tennis campaign by playing four straight 5-4 matches, but here on Friday night the Gorloks finally played a match that was not decided by a 5-4 score as Webster picked up an 8-1 victory over Illinois College at the Bellatti Tennis Complex.

The 8-1 match was Webster's biggest match win of the season and improved the Gorloks record to 3-2 on the year, while IC fell to 0-3.

In Friday's match, the Gorloks opened by winning all three doubles matches for the first time this season.

Senior Riley Muren (O'Fallon, Ill./Ill.-Springfield) and sophomore Tanner Haugen (Jefferson City, Mo./Jefferson City) moved to 3-2 on the season with their 8-6 win at the No. 1 spot, while freshman Justin Weaver (Fenton, Mo./Rockwood Summit) and junior Austin Nation (Oklahoma City, Okla./Purcell) won 8-4 at the No. 2 spot and sophomore Harsh Jaswal (O'Fallon, Mo./Fort Zumwalt West) and junior Courtland Butler (St. Louis, Mo./McKinley) won 8-2 at the No. 3 spot.

Meanwhile, in singles action, Webster won five of the six matches with their only loss coming at the No. 2 spot in the line-up as IC's Cameron Doerr prevented a 9-0 sweep for the Gorloks as he won by identical 7-5 scores at No. 2 singles over Weaver.

Perhaps match of the night came at the No. 3 spot as senior Nicolas Andrade (Quito, Ecuador/Francis Howell) won 7-6 (10-6) and 6-2 at the No. 3 spot over IC's Jacob McQueen.

At No. 1 singles, Muren improved to 5-0 on the season as he defeated IC's No. 1 player, Ethan Sabotta, in straight sets by identical 6-1 scores.

In singles action, the Gorloks lost a total of 31 games, but only dropped seven games at the final three spots - No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6, including Butler moving to 2-1 on the season after posting a 6-0, 6-0 win over IC's Patrick Gessner.

Jaswal won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 5 singles and Haugen won his first match at the No. 4 spot in the line-up this season as he defeated IC's Shane Koshokawa, 6-4, 6-2. Haugen is now 3-2 on the season in singles.

Webster will return to action on Sunday, March 8 as they open up play in the SpringTennis Fest in Hilton Head, S.C., against Nazareth College at 8:30 a.m. ET at the Chaplin Tennis Center.
