CLERMONT, Fla. - Webster University Softball its two games here Saturday on its second day of action in the 2020 PFX Spring Games held at Legends Way Complex.
In Saturday's action, the Gorloks opened the day by posting a 7-2 win over Houghton College and then concluding the day with a 12-4 setback to Saint Mary's (Minn.).
With the split of its games on Saturday, Webster moved back to .500 on the season at 4-4.
On the day, Webster's offense was strong as they totaled 21 hits in the two games, including recording a total of seven extra base hits as the Gorloks have now had 24 extra base hits in eight games.
In the win against Houghton (3-6), Webster had 12 hits, including four doubles and also got another outstanding pitching performance from sophomore
Arianna Arias (Pomona, Calif./Bishop Amat). Arias, who is now 2-0 on the season and has a 1.87 ERA, scattered eight hits and allowed two runs, one of which was earned, while walking two and striking out two in her second complete game of the season.
The Gorloks got on the scoreboard first in the top of the first inning thanks to a lead-off double by sophomore third baseman
Sheyla Iniguez (Riverside, Calif./Bloomington) and an RBI double a little later in the inning from sophomore leftfielder
Emma Steltzer (Manchester, Mo./University of New Mexico).
Houghton, though, would tie the game in the bottom of the second thanks to a lead off double from Grace Thompson, a ground out and a fielding error by junior shortstop
Kirbie Mendenhall (Robinson, Ill./Parkland College).
Webster would retake the lead in the third inning thanks to an RBI single by Steltzer and were poised to break the game open as they loaded the bases with no outs, but Houghton would get out of the jam by inducing sophomore second baseman
Taylor Jackson (Calgary, Alberta/Bishop Grandin) to line into a doublre play and forced junior rightfielder
Chloe Johnson (Hazelwoood, Mo./STLCC) to ground out.
For the game, Webster stranded 10 runners on base and Houghton left eight runners on.
Senior centerfielder
Abby Burroughs (Edwardsville, Ill./Triad) gave the Gorloks a 3-1 lead thanks to her RBI single in the fourth.
The Gorloks would add two more runs in the fifth, both of which scored on Johnson's double to right center. Johnson is now tied for the team lead in doubles this season with four.
Houghton would added its second run of the game in the bottom of the sixth inning thanks as they loaded the bases on three singles and then added an RBI single in the inning to cut Webster's lead to 5-2.
Webster would add two more runs to its total in the top of the seventh as they used two hits and a Houghton error to push its lead to 7-2. The first run came home on an RBI single from Arias and the second run scored thanks to a wild pitch from Houghton reliever Kayla Loomis.
Arias would complete her complete game by working around a single and a walk in the bottom of the seventh.
Steltzer paced Webster's offense against Houghton as she went 4-for-4 with 2 RBI, while Johnson added three hits and 2 RBI and Iniguez was 2-for-5 with two runs scored from the leadoff spot.
Thompson paced Houghton with two hits and scored both of her teams runs.
Grace Edwards (1-3) took the loss in the circle for Houghton as she tossed 4.1 innings and allowed eight hits and five runs, all of which were earned, and had one strikeout and walked two.
Meanwhile, in the second game of the day against Saint Mary's (Minn.), the Gorloks had nine hits, but their defense committed four errors and three Gorlok pitchers combined to walk seven Cardinal hitters and allow 13 hits.
Webster jumped in front 2-0 in the bottom of the first as Iniguez led off the inning by reaching on an error and the next batter, Burroughs brought her home on her triple to fence in center field and then sophomore first baseman
Ashlee Seltzer (Castle Pines, Colo./Rock Canyon) following Burrough's triple with an RBI single up the middle.
The Cardinals would get those two runs back in the top of the second thanks to a hit and two Gorlok errors that led to two unearned runs off of senior pitcher
Breelyn Craig (Victorville, Calif./Trinidad State), who earned the start in the circle against the Cardinals.
Saint Mary's would take a 3-2 lead in the third on an RBI groundout from Mackenzie Carey and added five more runs in the fourth to take an 8-2 lead in the game. In the fourth, the Cardinals 10 hitters to the plate and recorded five hits, including two 2-run hits against Mendenhall, who relieved Craig earlier in the inning.
The Cardinals lead grew to 9-2 in the fifth as they used two hits and two Gorlok errors to plate an unearned run.
Webster would mount a mini rally in the sixth as they recorded three hits, including an RBI single by Johnson to pull within 9-4.
Saint Mary's, though, would put the game out of reach in the seventh as they scored three runs on three hits, including plating two runs on a 2-run single to center by Carey.
Seltzer and freshman rightfielder
Alexandria Cafolla (Florissant, Mo./Hazelwood West) each had two hits for the Gorloks.
Amber Chow paced the Cardinals with three hits in four at-bats, while Carey and Amy Kulaga each had two hits in the win. Carey also recorded five RBI in the game.
Chow (5-2) was the winning pitcher for Saint Mary's as she pitched all seven innings and allowed nine hits and four runs (three earned), while striking out three and walking none.
Craig (0-2) took the loss in the circle for the Gorloks as she tossed three-plus innings and allowed five hits and five runs (three earned), while walking four and striking out one.
While Webster's defense had four errors, Saint Mary's committed three errors and the teams combined to leave 18 runners on base as the Gorloks stranded five and the Cardinals left 13 on base.
The Gorloks now take Sunday off before returning to action at the 2020 PFX Spring Games on Monday, March 9 with games at 9 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. ET against Pitt-Greensburg and Bates College respectively at Hancock Park in Clermont, Fla.
