ST. LOUIS, Mo. – This evening the Webster University volleyball team was defeated by Fontbonne (Mo.) University in their annual Dig Pink game. The Gorloks fell in five sets (25-23, 22-25, 20-25, 25-16, 10-15) to fall to 9-10 on the season and 3-4 in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. With the win, the Griffins improve to 6-11 on the season and 4-4 in SLIAC play.
Webster finished with 62 kills in the match and a .229 attacking percentage. They added three service aces, nine blocks, 53 assists, and 78 digs over five sets. The Griffins also finished with 62 kills in the match and had an attacking percentage of .201.
The Gorloks came out in the first set and exchanged points with the Griffins early. Fontbonne picked it up as the set progressed and went on an 8-3 run midway through the game to take a 17-11 lead in the frame. However, with the Gorloks trailing 23-18 late in the game, they went on a 7-0 run to end the set and take a 1-0 lead in the match.
After dropping the next two sets to find themselves trailing 2-1 in the match, the Gorloks came out in the fourth set and jumped out to an early 10-1 lead. The Griffins battled back and cut the score to seven, but another run from Webster solidified the fourth set victory for the Gorloks.
Webster came out in the fifth set and were able to take a quick 5-2 lead in the game. However, the Griffins bounced back and tied the score at six before ending the set on a 9-4 run to solidify the five set victory.
Lauren Borik led the way for the Gorloks as she finished with a team high 18 kills and 17 digs. In addition to Borik,
Kaylee Portell finished with 13 kills,
Emma Leppien finished with a team high 19 assists,
Mary Nelson finished with 14 assists, and
Kyra Gensel finished with a team high 17 digs to round out the top performers for Webster.
The volleyball team will return to action on Friday, October 15
th when they travel to Louisville, Kentucky, to take on the Spalding (Ky.) University Golden Eagles in a SLIAC matchup. The game is set to start at 6 p.m. EST.
