Gorloks Fall on the Road at Spalding

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Webster University volleyball team was back on the court this evening when they traveled to Louisville, Kentucky, to take on the Spalding (Ky.) University Golden Eagles in a SLIAC matchup. The Gorloks were defeated by the Eagles in four sets (19-25, 25-16, 25-27, 25-27) to fall to 9-11 on the season and 3-5 in SLIAC play. With the win, the Golden Eagles move to 7-11 on the year and 5-3 in the conference.

The Gorloks recorded 41 kills on 178 total attacks and finished with an attacking percentage of .101. They added 11 service aces, five blocks, 37 assists, and 99 digs in the match. The Golden Eagles finished with 57 kills in the match and an attacking percentage of .139.

After dropping the first set by a final score of 25-19, the Gorloks bounced back in the second. They went toe-to-toe with the Golden Eagles to start the set, before going on a 6-1 run midway through the game. Webster continued to play well as the set progressed and never let Spalding back in the game as they cruised to a 25-16 win to tie the match at one.

They carried over their momentum into the third set and jumped out to an early 6-2 lead. The Golden Eagles battled back and tied the score at seven, but another run from the Gorloks put them up 20-12 late in the game. However, Spalding answered by scoring 11 of the next 14 points to tie the score at 23. The Golden Eagles were able to pick up the final points of the set and took a 2-1 lead in the match.

Webster once again jumped out to an early lead in the fourth set as they held a 6-1 lead through the first seven points. The Golden Eagles rallied to tie the score at eight and were a few points ahead for most of the game. Despite being down, the Gorloks battled down the final stretch and were able to tie the score at 24. However, Spalding finished the set on a 3-1 run to solidify the win.

Webster had four players finish with double-digit digs including a team high 18 from Kyra Gensel. In addition to Gensel, Tori Cichelero finished with 16 digs, Lauren Borik added 15 digs, and Mary Nelson finished with 13 digs.

Borik led the attack for the Gorloks as she finished with a team high 13 kills. Mary Nelson finished with a team high 10 assists, and Kaylee Portell had five service aces to round out the top performers for Webster.

The Gorloks will return to the court on Wednesday, October 20th when they host Blackburn (Ill.) College in a SLIAC matchup. The game is set to start at 7 p.m. in Grant's Gymnasium.
