ST. LOUIS, Mo. – This evening the Webster University volleyball team was back on the court when they played host to the Blackburn (Ill.) College Beavers in a SLIAC matchup. The Gorloks were able to get back to their winning ways tonight as they defeated the Beavers in three sets (25-14, 25-18, 25-20) to improve to 10-11 on the season and 4-5 in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. With the loss, the Beavers fall to 2-21 on the season and 2-7 in the conference.
The Gorloks finished with 47 kills in the match and a .252 attacking percentage. They added eight service aces, four blocks, 40 assists, and 55 digs. They held the Beavers to 24 kills in the match and a .087 attacking percentage.
In the first set of the match, both teams came out and exchanged points early. The Gorloks settled in as the game progressed and were able to go on a 12-1 run to end the set to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
They carried over that momentum into the second set and jumped out to an early 10-5 lead. They continued to play well and held a 20-10 lead late in the game. The Beavers bounced back and cut the lead to six, but that was as close as they would get as the Gorloks picked up the final points to solidify the win.
In the third set of the match, the Beavers came out strong and held a 13-10 lead midway through the game. However, the Gorloks quickly tied the score at 13 and ended the set on a 12-7 run to solidify the sweep.
Lauren Borik led the way for the Gorloks as she finished with a game high 13 kills to go along with a team high 13 assists. In addition to Borik,
Mary Nelson finished with 10 kills and 10 assists,
Emma Leppien finished with a team high 17 assists, and
Tori Cichelero added 10 digs to round out the top performers for the Gorloks.
It's a quick turnaround for the Gorloks as they are back in action tomorrow, October 23
rd when they play host to the Eureka (Ill.) College Red Devils for a SLIAC matchup. This game will serve as Senior Day for the Gorloks and prior to the start of the match we will honor the three seniors on the team for their contributions to the program. The match is set to start at 1 p.m. in Grant's Gymnasium.
